New Oct. Motor Trend Article...

New article about the '05 STi and the new EVO VIII MR. I didn't realize the STI's lost so much power from the engine to the wheels, the EVO actually makes more HP to the wheels than the STI. Good article...
If you click on the pics then expand them they're easier to read.

Kevin M 2004-09-13 09:11 PM

Where did you see that the Evo put more power to the wheels? The STi doesn't really have more drivetrain loss than the Evo. Mitsubishi under-represents the Evo horsepower numbers.

qksubi 2004-09-13 09:17 PM

Kevin this is the article I was talking about at matt's on sunday :!: you where saying somthing about the drums on the dyno rememder :?:
what did you say about that :? :?:

Kevin M 2004-09-13 09:39 PM

Ah, there it is, I see it now.

Yeah, the Evo MR has a turbo that's bigger than the STi's actually. With the large turbo and smaller motor, it will always make more dyno horsepower without really being faster in a straight line. It's because of the way horsepower is calculated.

sybir 2004-09-13 09:43 PM

I don't know, but I call shenanigans when an STi makes only 233 to the wheels on a Dynojet.

Matt's car, while it was in "gifted mode", made what, 232 on our Mustang?

I hope I don't need to point out the gap in logic here......

tysonK 2004-09-13 09:51 PM

It's all wrong, just so wrong.

Yeah, something doesn't add up.

And I guess the discussion of the EVO's having AYC in an earlier post is moot...the USDM cars don't get it. On another topic... I saw another article comparing the Mitsubishi Evo VIII MR FQ-400 to the Pagani Zonda and some other ultra exotic cars...

sp00ln 2004-09-13 10:57 PM

much love guys, much love <3

sp00ln 2004-09-13 11:00 PM

Oh, and the EVO MR slapped around the STI on the Top Gear track.

/devils advocate

Evo Mike 2004-09-13 11:01 PM

:P :D

If I could afford and simply find an MR... I'd get one over an STi. Owning a limited production EVO like that would be awesome. Plus I'd flog it on the race track.

Especially considering that Mistu may not be around much longer... that EVO8 MR might be a pretty rare beast. BTW: can you swap in AYC on a US car if you call Harry's and had it overnighted?

You have to remove the charcoal canister next to the fuel tank to make room for the electronics. If the wiring harnesses were there.

Plus it has vortex generators on the roof. Attention to aerodynamic detail like that on a production car is extremely rare. :disco:

I've heard about the 340 hp version of the EVO MR, I thought that was the one coming here. Now I find out that the new american EVO MR has only 5 HP more ???? That is pathetic.

ArthurS 2004-09-14 09:00 AM

+ 6-speed
+ Other goodies

MikeK 2004-09-14 09:28 AM

True ... but why can't they just import the real versions of fast cars? Why do they always have to cut the nuts off the car first? (yeah I know, california emission + epa mileage requirements + blah blah blah)

Don't forget DOT's bass-ackwards sense of saftey... like "projector headlights put out too much light, and are therefore unsafe on the road".

Unless the sprayer is automatic, it's pretty useless anyway.

Anyone of you STi guys have time at RFR to spray the IC? If so, what temp was it at and what did it come down to when you sprayed it? How did you know it needed to be sprayed?

W/o the ECU or an external computer monitoring and spraying the IC automatically, the sprayer's just a gimick... unless you're just using it to fend off heat soak when you're sitting in traffic... in which case, it's not like you really can drive fast, since you're stuck in traffic.

It's only a detune. A simple fix with some mods.

Excellent!

tysonK 2004-09-14 08:42 PM

Perfect for them to void your warranty!

IF I bought an MR I would do thing to it except for wheels! Those wheels they come with are hot though!

and that is the god honest truth.
