Well, he modded his daily driver past the point where he felt he could drive it daily in the wintertime, so rather then swap out suspension pieces, its easier to buy a new car.

And in the immortal words of his mother "So, you won't really need to modify this car, right?"

Yeah, I'm sure it will stay bone stock

MikeK 2004-09-20 08:28 AM

She is correct, he won't "need" to :P

AtomicLabMonkey 2004-09-20 08:34 AM

If he needed a daily driver he shoulda gotten a truck so he'd have half of the future towing rig.

Let's do the math:

Truck, w/ 4WD, not beat to hell, comfortable enough for long drives, and large enough to tow a car: $10,000 minimum...
+ gas @ <10mpg
+ never driving it around town because it's too big
+ where do I park it?

= way too much money, and it wouldn't really keep me from putting miles on the WRX

'94 SVX: $2000 + repairs to get into good shape
+ gas @ 24mpg
+ driving it everyday instead of the WRX keeps miles of the car that's actually worth something
+ fits in the garage
+ extremely comfortable on long trips
+ capable in snow

= much better idea. :P

Are those SVX's any fast at all? I've always thought that they looked like a neat car.

MattR 2004-09-20 12:46 PM

Well, it's got a N/A 3.3L boxer6... 230hp/227ft-lb, which are basically WRX numbers, but the car weight a whopping 500lbs *more* than a WRX. Also, they came only with automatic trannies. So, the car is "fast", but it's not "quick", and being quick is where all the fun is.

Compared to my WRX, the SVX is a friggen BOAT... (in fact it drives very much like my '05 T-Bird did, but a little faster). It's uber comfortable (leather seats, suede/wood dash, auto A/C) w/ a very "driver-oriented" interior. Plus, with all the weight, soft suspension, and decent power, it's perfect for cruising on the freeway. You have to be careful, because you get going, then look down and realize your coming up on 90mph and it still feels like 50.

The cars have notoriously bad transmissions, and mine has all the problems that they normally get. I'm planning on doing a 5-speed swap if/when I get a 6-speed for the WRX, since the WRX 5-speed is as plug-n-play as they come for the SVX. I'm also planning on converting the car to a true dual exhaust, instead of the crappy Y-pipe that came on the car, but nothing extreme. Plus, after a tranny sway, you have to do springs because of the weight change (5MT is about 150lbs lighter), so I'll probably lower the car a bit and put some 18" rims on it.
