I got sideswiped by a potato truck (no joke)

Here we go again. I must be extraordinarily unlucky this year. Rachel & I were in Winnemucca this morning, and got sideswiped by a potato container truck.

He was in the left lane and I was in the right at an intersection. He turned right at the light, and as soon as I saw him doing so, I laid on the horn and tried to get away to the right, but did not have enough time or room. His truck scraped along the driver's side of the car and dragged us against the curb. At least he stopped the truck before the rear wheels drove up on us!

:( :(

I was able to drive it to a body shop and was hoping to get the fender walls banged out enough to limp it home. However, a mechanic looked at it, then recommended not driving it due to damage in the engine compartment near some of the airbag sensors. Bah! I had to rent a car there to get home. And now I need to return the car to Winnemucca and get another ride home.

Tyson, are you in Reno this weekend, or could I have gotten lucky & you are in Winnemucca, coming home tomorrow?

ArthurS 2004-09-25 02:42 PM

Holy

So sorry Debbie. Hopefully it will be all good in the end.

sperry 2004-09-25 10:58 PM

I'm sooo sorry to see that poor blue car! :(

If I had been in Reno, I would have gone to pick you up, no problem. Hopefully your insurance company will cover the rental.

Thank God no one's hurt. As nice as that car was, it's just a car. Maybe a blue STi next? Or maybe you should look into building yourself a nice STXL WRX!

Libila 2004-09-25 11:48 PM

I'm sorry to see that. It's good you are ok though. Best of luck with whatever car you choose next.

murphy 2004-09-26 09:33 AM

Hey, thanks everybody for your condolences and offers of help, and joking. I needed some smileys ...
An angel came through and gave me a ride back from Winnemucca today. Thank you angel! Cack, what a long drive both ways in one day.
Now comes the hateful wait to find out what it will cost to repair, and what insurance is going to do with that information. I'm guessing it's gonna cost alot to fix - left side body panels, side mirror, front bumper, xenon headlight, windshield, rear door is stuck shut, and torn metal on both fenders scraping against the tires. We were also pushed up & over the curb - so the alignment and frame will need to be checked, and all 4 wheels are damaged.
I love that car! I love its looks, and it is wonderfully fun to drive on the streets, but was not as competitive as I hoped it would be in autox. As many of you know, I had also been concerned about taking it to a track, and the Fernley incident only served to amplify my concern. But if it can be fixed - then I just hope it won't take too long. If its totalled - I don't have any idea what I'll do next.

EVO-MR

Order a EVO-MR in gunmetal  :!: That car rocks deb and you wont have to do anything to it. Well maybe a catback so you arent so silent on the track on the track!!

sybir 2004-09-27 06:41 AM

Sorry to hear it :(
Glad you're ok, as that's the only important thing.
You need another wagon, though......

MattR 2004-09-27 07:45 AM

I agree. I think this might be a total loss.

Dean 2004-09-27 08:26 AM

From what I can tell, it is motly cosmetic, but we shall see... If they do total it, I'm pretty sure someone will do th body work and put it back on the road...

My guess at parts...

Left Rear Quarter
Both Driver side doors
Left Front Quarter
Left door sil ?
Windshield
Hood
Front Bumper cover
Driver side mirror
Left headlight ?
Wheels, 2-4?
Passenger side suspension?

If one of the doors won't close, I can almost guarentee the "frame's bent". Plus the cost of the Xenon headlight from the dealer alone (probably in the neighborhood of $3000) will quickly add up to total the car. And like Dean said, there's only like 2 or 3 parts on the body that aren't damaged.

To be honest, just like the WRX wagon, you probably don't want that car back if they repair it. :( The good news is that once again, the wreck isn't your fault, and I would guess that since a trucking company caused the wreck, their insurance is just going to want to settle ASAP and make you happy, so you shouldn't have a big problem getting the car's value.

Perhaps you can get enough to buy a WRX wagon straight up? Maybe an '03 or '04? I'd like to see a rebirth of "Debbie's Blue Wagon... now with STXL!!"

Not necessarily.. just the door bending up can tweak it so it won't close. Plus, door hinges seem to usually just mount into sheet metal, so if those mounts are bent they could just be bent back into place.

Sorry to hear about yet another accident Debbie. :(

Remeber, the doors lock to each other, no B Pillar, so doors not closing right does not mean frame damage.

Since speeds were so slow, I think sheet metal, probably took the brunt of the damage, and possibly the control/connecting/suspension arms on the passenger side from the curb hit.

I can't actually see from the picture if the light itself is damaged, or just everything around it...

I guess we will see though...

Don't forget, she has those WRX stockers with hoosiers... G or H Stock Ladies Automatic Legacy Wagon...

Wow. A rear dual set across the roof might have sucked. Glad you're OK!

STIwish 2004-09-27 10:09 AM

ouch hun :( :( Im gonna have to agree with Sperry though, even if it can be fixed, I don't think you want it back... car shopping time again!

What's a cdl lic. type truck?
Here's a picture of a truck that looks similar. I just don't remember the potato truck having fenders over the tires.
