Road Rally WMCA lake

Our recreation planner was telling me about this a few weeks ago, just wondering if any of you guy's know or heard anything about it. This race is going to be north of Fernly in between Nixon and Empire east side of 447.

The first scheduled race is the Sports Car Road Rally. It would begin on the north side of Winnemucca Lake and travel around the Nightingale Mountains/Sage Hen Valley areas before looping back to the start. Approximately 30 cars would travel individually through an existing timed course. It is proposed for November 13 and 14, 2004.

Sweet./.. Never heard of it...Is it on paved roads, or dirt? Sounds interesting.

FIREX 2004-09-27 01:49 PM

l think its going to be road and dirt? I'll post more info on the race when I talk to our rec gal

sperry 2004-09-27 01:54 PM

Wait, this isn't a TSD (Time Speed Distance) rally? Usually "Road Rally" implies it's more of a navigation challenge... basically an attempt to drive a certain course at a precice average speed.

JC 2004-09-27 02:41 PM

Sounds like a TSD. Let us know when you get more info.

What the hell?

Wow. I've 4wd'd many of the roads back there --- some of that would be NUTZ in a Subaru! If I could afford to replace my whole car right after the race, I'd want in!

Fast dirt driving + navigation sounds like a blast...

TSD is usually *not* fast and *not* off road. It's all about getting from point A to point B on public streets in a prescribed time, sometimes with random checkpoints on the route.

Quote:

In a Road Rally, each team of two people--a driver and a navigator--is given a set of route directions to follow, and the speeds at which they should travel the route. The route will generally consist of rural and quieter back roads. At the very least, you'll have a nice drive in the country!

The goal of a Road Rally is to travel the correct route at the correct speeds, and arrive at ``checkpoints'' precisely on time. You are scored on how closely to the correct time you arrive. A Road Rally is not a race, and no rally will ever require you to drive in a reckless or illegal fashion. Arriving too early at a checkpoint hurts your score, as does arriving too late.

Novices are especially encouraged to participate in Road Rallies. Novices compete within a special Novice Class, and not with the more experienced rallyists.

All the ones in MI were dirt roads for the most part and fast is relative. Speeds were generally faster than the "speed limit."

I've never participated, I'm just repeating the info I've read/heard about.

I never did either, but I knew quite a few people who did.

Where he's talking about there is no pavement....

FIREX 2004-09-28 12:26 PM

I talked to our rec planner this morning she told me the guy who's putting this race together works at the Porsche dealer in Reno his name is Dave Hackett, she's waiting for the map of the race route and more info on the race in general before the permit is issued. I've driven around most of the dirt roads in that area some are very nice and some, lookout lava rocks.

MattR 2004-09-28 12:28 PM

Dave's the guy Scott and I were working with to start a rally program...He seemed very knowledgable in the area of event planning, etc...Good to see him getting an event off the ground.

FIREX 2004-09-29 09:54 AM

We got the map of the race route, Dave Hackett said no flyer out yet, he is looking for some volunteers to help with the race. have a good day

If that's a weekend, I'm in... except I don't have any safety steward training. Not sure if you'll have a spot for me.

I really want to work a rally as well! I'm in too!

FIREX 2004-10-03 02:16 PM

I'm going to try to be there too, I have Dave's phone#, I posted it but then I edited it out, figured I better give the guy a call and ask him if its ok to post his cell #. I'll give him a call in the morning. will be a fun time

FIREX 2004-10-27 07:20 PM

I've been down in Florida Hurricane Ivan just got back, this is a note I got from our rec planner:

FYI - -

I just spoke with the Special Recreation Permit Applicant and he has to
postpone the November 2004 event due to a sponsor dropping out and
losing
the liability insurance coverage. He is hoping to put it on November
5&6,
2005.

I am sure you are all as sad as I am about this cancellation,
.b.
