April 26/27 Autocross pics
Pictures from both days of the autocross are up in the "Reno Meets" gallery:
http://doink.net/gallery/index.php?g...y/Reno%20Meets If anyone else has pics from the event, email them to me, or burn 'em on a CD and bring them to the next meet! Tyson took command of my camera during my runs on Sunday, so there's a bunch of pics of me and Jesse, the new owner of a '03 WRB WRX Sedan! Hopefully we'll see him on the board, or at the next meet! Hey Austin, you might be interested in this car: [img:e1747649e6=700]http://doink.net/gallery/Reno%20Meets/03-04-27%20SCCA%20Autocross%20at%20Stead/DSCF0017%20Mustang%20Cockpit.JPG[/img:e1747649e6] it's a '95 mustang taken to the limit with mods... it's NASCAR inside!! More pics in the gallery. |

The American Auto-X event this weekend was the bomb too.. Castle AFB is actually a really cool site even if it is out in the middle of nowhere. It only takes about 1:15 minutes to get there from where I am so it's not too bad, that's closer than the Marina events down in Monterey. It's pretty similar to Marina, a concrete paddock area off to the side of the runways, but it didn't seem to be as abrasive of a surface.
1st day was cool, I was still getting used to the car with the new coil-over setup... the harder I kept pushing it the more the car understeered though, even with the rear swaybar set at full stiff. 2nd day I had Mike Maier co-drive it with me which was awesome, I picked up a lot of driving tips from him cause he's a real good driver and he's been doing this for years. I started out a couple seconds slower than him, and each time we switched and I watched what he was doing I was like "Ohh, wow.. I didn't know my car could do that.. I'm gonna try that next time". One of the biggest things was left-foot braking, I've done that in circle-track cars before but never tried it in my own car in auto-x. That made a huge difference cause I could make real small mid-corner corrections with the brake and gas and get the thing to stick on-line better.. it helped calm down the heavy understeer the car has right now. After my fourth run I actually beat Mike by a tenth, I was pretty stoked. After that I had to shut it down and skip my last run cause the car was real hot and pinging like crazy through every gear, I didn't want to blow up the motor. So anyway, my chassis setup needs some adjustment.. I'm gonna need some stiffer rear springs to try and tune out the understeer. You guys gotta come down to one of these American events, the courses are awesome.. even if you like small tight SCCA-type courses, it's a blast to try one of these just for the speed. 3rd gear both days, the 2nd day I was over 80mph in 3rd I think. |

I was surprised... this last event was *not* a tight course. Not quite 3rd gear American AutoX fast, but I was up around 6500 rpm in 2nd... that's over 60 mph.
On Sunday we did 2 lap runs.... my front tires were way overheated by the end of the second run. I really should have tightened up the rear swaybar... but I was afraid of rain... Stead also has impeccable tarmac to race on... very good asphault. The slowest AutoX I've done is still that NASA event in Monterey. :x |
Yeah, course was designed by John Evans, a WRX driver. It favored high horsepower (vs.some of the tight turn courses he designed last year when he was driving a Miata).
Hope some of you can go to Hawthorne at the end of May, that's a 3rd gear course, running at the Hawthorne airport. |

If they'd like me to zip up an archive of the pics, let me know, and I can put all the pics in one file on the site for easier downloading. Hell, I'll just go and do that now, I can FTP from work. |
Debbie, all the pics are zipped up into 2 ~100MB zip files.
Point the SCCA webmaster to these files: http://doink.net/gallery/Reno%20Meet...ead_sperry.zip and http://doink.net/gallery/Reno%20Meet...ead_sperry.zip One zip for each day's photos. |
That's alot of zip!
Thanks Scott! |
Hehe.. still using #04 Scott? I'm still using #03... damn that's been like years since we came up with that for league racing online.

Dude I just finally watched the in-car footage from the WRX, and that's *awesome*... IN-CAR BABY! 8) I need some of that good stuff for mine...
|
Mike's car is looking pretty good... it's YELLOW!!! Is it fast yet?
I liked the in-car footage so much, i built a camera mount that attaches to the passenger head rest to get a better angle on the driving. It's like WRC footage! |
