Source for JDM Transmissions?

Well, I figure I should start looking for a 6-speed in earnest. I still can't actually afford one, but I figure it will take some time to find one, so hopefully by the time I get a source, I'll have the money.

So I need two things: a comprehensive list of parts that I need for the swap, and a place to sell me said parts.

What I really want is a JDM 6-speed (closer ratios than the US STi) *without* the DCCD (I figure it's an unnecessary expense for a pure-tarmac car). I'd really like a set of Cusco or Quaife tarmac diffs for the tranny as well.

Here's my parts list so far:

- JDM 6-speed non-DCCD transmission
- R180 rear-end housing
- Excede Clutch and Lightened Flywheel
- Cusco Front/Mid/Rear diffs (may not need the rear diff, R180 might be good enough)
- Custom axles that mate the R180 to WRX rear hubs - or - STi rear axles, rear uprights/hubs, rear brakes
- Do the front WRX axles work w/ an STi tranny?
- Do I need a different drive shaft?
- Starter
- Tranny mount
- STi short shifter linkage
- STi shift knob w/ reverse lockout
- STi shifter boot
- Installation

Anyone know how much I should expect to pay for all that?

Also, keep in mind that I'm planning on an STi or EJ22T block and VF22/Large TopMount in the future. I don't think there are any compatability issues with a JDM 6-speed, but just in case, I'm mentioning it.

Let's get the smart ass answer out of the way

Harry's?

Why are you looking for a new tranny now?

I can't make more power in the WRX w/o a tranny upgrade. I'd rather upgrade the tranny 1st, rather than break it later.

6-speed gear ratios will also make my car *much* faster w/o having to even touch the motor. Especially the close ratio JDM gearset. As it is, the ratios used in the US 5-speed are designed to keep you out of boost to save gas and help emmisions. Since this is my track car... screw saving gas, and screw the environment... 1000 miles a year a 7mpg isn't gonna kill the spotted owl.

Plus, the SVX keeps asking me for a 5-speed swap, and guess what, the WRX 5-speed is as drop in as they come...

The money required could probably pay for a full cage, race seat & harness... just a thought.

I'd love more power in the Mustang, but I think I'm just gonna keep the engine the way it is for the forseeable future while I start getting track time in it. I'd rather do my learning in a relatively low power car, rather than a high-powered one...

MattR 2004-12-09 05:45 PM

But why on earth do you need your car to be so much faster ? :P

murphy 2004-12-09 05:55 PM

its not up and going yet. But the guy I bought my cosmo engine from is getting a new invester that has direct connections with japanese companies..and pretty soon whatever you want you can get..from what I was told yesterday just request it and you will get it...if it goes through it works out well with me...direct access to HKS japan..sweet...well for me but not you guys..here HKS is the ...

MattR 2004-12-09 06:07 PM

PM Spooln, have him bring some parts back from Japan.

Kevin M 2004-12-09 06:25 PM

Gruppe-S would be the quickest solution, if you're willing to work with them and basically place an order for what you want. Also, try talking to Nate, he has connections at Chaste Auto, and they do some importing. Alex at BozzSpeed can hook us up with Cusco diffs pretty cheap, so if you're serious about that part, let me know. Otherwise, you've mostly got it covered- it takes lots of parts, but getting them all at once isn't that big a deal. Also keep your eye out for deals like I got- get a US spec drivetrain and all the bits, then trade the gearbox and DCCD parts for a JDM box and cash. You should be able to come in between $4500-5500 for all parts necessary, especially if you get them all off the same car.

Kevin's list has teh winz0rz!!

I have seen the guy from this place post about jdm tranny and engine swaps all the time on nasioc (he posts as both AZScoobie and Kingpin). I remember reading that they can now do a full v7 engine swap in a day, they have done so many of them.

example thread:

The cage, seats, harnesses and fire system are on the list as well, since I need them all to be Solo1 legal.

I'm not planning on making more power quite yet. The tranny will not only prepare the car to handle more power, it will also make the power I've got now a whole lot more useful. I'm hoping w/ the close ratio 6-speed I will be competitive with the NESP STis running against them from NSM. Sure they'll still have about 30hp over me (you bastards and your re-maps) but I think my suspension and brakes still a tiny bit better. If I can make better use of the power I've got, I think I can hang.

The additional power comes later... maybe next year. Unless I find a complete STi drivetrain for cheap. (Hey what tranny came on the v7 JDM STi? It was a 5-speed wasn't it? :()

Kevin M 2004-12-10 10:33 AM

No, the bugeye STis all had 6 speeds.

Sounds like I just need the complete motor/tranny out of a v7 STi then eh? 'Course, then Nate prolly can't tune a JDM ECU... will a WRX one work?

Actually, EcuTek can flash any JDM Subaru... or you can just keep your US ECU, but you'd have to swap your TGV-having manifold onto the new motor. There would be pros and cons to either route. The complete drivetrain route might be a good call though... if you don't mind dropping the 10 Gs all at once. :(

I think I'd rather have a newly built motor over some Japanese dude's project car. Also, didn't the JDM v7 have AVCS?

Me too, and yes, although that can be circumvented. I may eventually switch to v7 heads if it turns out the Hydra for the RS can control AVCS.

Whoa, you guys have high-speed trains on your manifolds!? That's awesome!

Ok ok, I'll shut up now...

In terms of sources, here are a couple from my 3S sources...

There are dozens and dozens of shops like those... I personally wouldn't call anyplace without a pretty good rep in the Subaru community, or at least a couple folks running around with stuff they got through a specific shop. Too much shadiness from the small guys.

JC 2004-12-10 04:13 PM

Lachute can probably get you whatever you want. Shipping might be expensive though. Keep in mind prices are CDN.

Lachute is an excellent source, but like you said, shipping and going through 2 currency exchanges might kill you.
