UPDATE!?!
Okay, so the dealer is going to have to drop a brand new shortblock in the car. costing a total off $5,000. The nice thing about that is that it is the company who fixed my oil leaks fault... because the guy took off my pulley in able to get to the leak... and didnt tighten the bolt correctly. So they are going to pay for it. I will have the car by thursday or friday by the latest... :roll:

You might want to consider paying to have a head job done while it/they are off anyway. Then you will effectivly have a new motor...

humm, i would take the $$ and buy an STi shortblock.. OR a spec C motor? i knwo you can get those from gruppe S installed for under 5k :lol: i would definetly go a different route than them spending 5k on the same thing you had before!

they quoted you a really high price for a shortblock + install
and if they messed it up the first time I would have them pay another shop to do the work :? if they will give you the 5k to go somewhere else :twisted: |

What I want to know is how having the accessory belt come off ruined your short block. Normally all that would happen is that the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioner would stop spinning.
Perhaps it was the timing belt that came loose? 'Course then the short block would still be okay, but your valves and pistons might be ruined... which would mean head work and a new bottom-end potentially, but unless the car made a seriously huge boom when it happened, the short block would be fine. |
i went down this morning with my dad to inspect it, and there are little shavings of metal in the crankshaft... so they were just like, okay new shortblock. So Subaru is going to do it and i should have it back by friday. =D :D

The whole bit about a short block and the "pulled the pulley off to get the leak" description says that it really was an idler pulley on the timing belt. So.....I'm not sure what happened. The first problem is a cheap, fast fix. The second involves major dough. Such is life when the dealer gets involved, eh? |
they tried telling my mom that it was because of the aftermarket intake, headers, and exhaust. So when we went down, we had them tell us what they told my mom, and we laughed, literally. Then my dad explained the scenario and they were like, "Oh, well that makes sense now."

Brandon... if you can get yourself a set of SOHC heads... DO IT! At the very least that will prevent you from needing new head gaskets every 60k miles. :lol: Better yet, do what all these other guys have said: take the $5000 from the shop and get a WRX swap done! ...'course then you have to promise to take care of that thing and not drive like an idiot. If you were to kill a red '98 w/ a turbo motor we'd have to kill you back. :P |

No, it won't :| SOHC's have the same issues on 2.5 blocks, it's just not quite as common becuase they were produced later in the revision cycle and never had the crappy gaskets which cause the issue in the first place. Also, SOHC's blow the HG's externally, and tend to have more extensive head damage when they go, in my expereince ;) My DOHC didn't go until 120k, and that was with me abusing the hell out of the car. DOHC revs better, too ;) |
THEY STILL HAVE NOT STARTED ON MY CAR... damn insurance adjuster people! its been 3 weeks without my car... and i hate it. :evil:
