Mustang turbos

Turbo kit under development for the new Mustangs:

That's gonna be pretty nuts.

MikeSTI 2005-01-18 09:32 AM

that does look nuts

I dont understand why you would want to turbo a N/A car though. Isn't it better to just go the super charger route? 7/8 psi seems like a lot of unused turbo (x2)

No fair. You've already got displacement, you don't need FI as well.

From my understanding both turbos & superchargers have their advantages & disadvantages. Disadvantages of a supercharger include significant drag on the engine, plus having to deal with a super-tight serpentine belt to keep the charger pulley from slipping & reducing boost.

The Turbo vs. Supercharger debate has been going for eons. The reason you usually see superchargers on large displacement cars is because most people that have the large displacement cars are into drag racing, and the supercharger is a little bit better for dragging than turbos since the power is lag-less.

However, for a track driven Mustang, I could see a twin-turbo kit making a lot of sense. The car already has a ton of torque low-down, so much so, that traction is already an issue exiting corners. The added low-end grunt that the supercharger has over the turbo isn't necessary in that scenario. Also, a 4.6L or 5.0L motor can flow quite a bit of exhaust, so they should get pretty good turbo response.

That kit in particular looks like it could be using TD04 (stock WRX) sized turbos. Two of those should be good enough to flow for 500 to 600hp. Although I'd like to see the compression on the motor dropped a hair so they could run the turbos in the 12psi range where they're most efficient, using them to boost 6 or 7 intercooled psi on a stock motor should make that car faster than stink, with a ton of low-end to boot.

Assuming the driver can keep the wheels hooked up, that Mustang will smoke STi's at the strip, and with the addition of suspension and brake mods, it should give even modded STi's a run out at the track.

I have to say, I am impressed with the new cars. We have one at the shop now and although I don't care much for the interior, from a performance standpoint it is really nice. It actually feels like a well put together car straight from the factory, as opposed to the older ones like mine which feel like 1978 Fairmonts. It rides well and grips the road without being overly harsh, chassis feels stiff, steering and brakes are quite responsive, and the engine feels good too. 8)

I would just think for the price of that kit, you might as well do a little more so you could run higher boost

I agree... I think lower compression pistons + higher boost would make a ton more power, and be less prone to knock. Drop that motor to 9.0:1 and bump the boost to 12 psi.

According to the rumor mill you'd probably need to replace the pistons anyway to run any more than minimal boost like that, due to the OEM piston strength limitations.

Like pretty much every factory non-turbo motor.

we our only trying to get 12psi not 25+ it takes for a STi to need a piston swap, I did want to post that!!!

Speaking of 05 mustangs - Has anyone seen those around yet?

Yes, Chuck (MM owner) has one as a daily driver. We got it in a little over a week ago.

I've seen a few around, here and there.

Kevin M 2005-01-19 02:18 PM

I saw like 7 on the way to Thunder Hill and back last saturday. Only seen one in Reno so far- wonder why. ;)

sp00ln 2005-01-21 09:58 PM

How do they look in person?

Kevin M 2005-01-22 12:56 AM

I love the front end, but the profile is kind of "eh" around the rear fender/C pillar. Looks okay from behind. Much better on first impression than the last redesign (which I also liked styling-wise).

This isnt about turbos but its about Mustangs.. lol
besides I was too lazy to start a new thead..
I dont usually like Mustangs but this picture is badass !!! I especially like the choice of Color ;)

AtomicLabMonkey 2005-02-02 01:38 PM

Hmm. Looks like mostly a Saleen knock-off.. the bodywork's a little too cluttered for my taste.

It certainly wouldn't be the first, or the last.
