clank in engine ???? i dunno

I was under my hood today while my engine was running and i heard a clanking noise so i slowly braught up the revs up and it dident speed up with it. So I figure its not a bearing! but it is sparratic and it clanks. It is cumming from the upper passanger side and you cant hear it from underneith.

My car has a AEM intake Turbo xs ,magnaflow exhaust and it has around
69000 on the car anyone have any ideas??????

Dean 2005-01-30 06:48 PM

Rythmic or random? It sounds like expanding or contracting exhaust/turbo which is normal unless it also sounds like there is an exhaust leak.

Was this after driving and then idling in the driveway, or not to long after starting?

See if it does it immediately when the car is started from cold. Or, when warm, let it idle for 5-15 minutes to stabilize temps, and see if it does it.

random and the car did sit for a few hours today... i did just pull up a p0244 wastegate solenoid high output..prob from over boosting Also i just noticed then it was warmed up it dident do it at idle or when slowly bringing up the revs! It does it when i get off the gas????

yea funny ya lil bastard!!

Dean 2005-01-31 10:43 AM

Can you hear/feel it in the car? If so, it may be your exhaust hitting on the frame cross member right under your feet. Are you still on OEM motor mounts? Does your exhaust still have heat shields? Could be those banging into something as well.

Cold air intakes also like to rattle (I can feel mine through the brake/clutch pedals when it shifts). Make sure you have something padding around the hole in the fender that it goes thorugh.

So you're positive the engine is gone?

02wrxdemon 2005-01-31 07:59 PM

im sure but...im gettin it looked at tomarrow...... hopefully i can get a good used jdm sti engine for it

sp00ln 2005-01-31 09:07 PM

Its tomOrrow and it honestly just sounds like something is loose. Just check all bolts and what-not in the area youre hearing the sound from.

And is there a difference in the '02 WRX ''JDM'' engine from the one sold in your US 02 WRX? Unless youre upgrading to the STI JDM ofcourse.

Actually... we've got a pretty low tolerence for poor english skills on this board. For better or for worse, you'll get better responses and info from us if you're more litterate in your posts, especially in the tech forum where communication skills are paramount.

And, I'll just assume you're being sarcastic about the "foot in your ass" comment, but in the future you should probably refrain from talking shit to people you don't know personally. Most of us on the board are all friends outside of the board, and we joke around like that, but at the same time, it means new people probably should tread a bit lightly and come to a few meets to get to know us in person before talking shit.

For an example of what I'm talking about: read this.

Dean 2005-01-31 10:15 PM

Well Put Scott.

I can't say we all spell well regularly, but we try and use capitals, punctuation, and occasionally grammar if absolutely necessary. :-)

Please do not take offense at any of my comments.

Sp00ln was maybe a little out of line about the spelling, but he probably wouldn't have said anything if that had been the only error, but it wasn't. I count nine basic errors in the sentence he was commenting about.

My simple advice is spend some time on your posts, and try and be nice to people, and they will do the same to you.

OK I Just recieved a call from "prefered aut service ) about my clanking noise they said i should drive it more till it makes more noise!!! And they told me that they would not work on my ride because it hmon as too many mods. C'Mon bov intake and exhaust are too many mods? Anyone out here know where else in reno I can take my car for a possible enginr rebuild/swap? And where they dont hate cuz of mods....

For a shop attempting to do repairs under warranty, *one* mod is "too many". Hell most places won't even warranty their own repairs if you've got mods, or they know the car is being driven competitively... there's just too many variables that can break something.

And, I'm still not too sure that the motor's toast. Have you followed up on any of the suggestions posted in here thus far? I thought that checking the CAI for rubbing on the fender was a pretty good suggestion... I know I added some rubber padding around my Injen to prevent clunking on the fender when the motor pitches. How's your clearence?

MattR 2005-02-01 05:38 PM

Yeah, I'm not so sure the engine needs replacing...You are still driving it correct? That might be a kneejerk reaction to a potentially minor problem.

As far as shops go, Independent Automotive in Sparks is the best Subaru shop in town

02wrxdemon 2005-02-01 09:39 PM

Yeah I have checked for any rubbing of the intake as well as the heatshield on the turbo and the downpipe. Strange it runs fine but there is a certain clank when you get off the gas! Im just gonna drive it till somthing else happens! Who knows maybe my lurking arse will go to Bullys this thurs. and let you all hear what is driving me crazy! Anyhow I do appreachiate all you your opinions and expierences

Later
Rich

My car makes a similar noise. Nate (from Subaru Specialists) thinks its my tranny not meshing right. It sure sounds like it's coming from the engine to me though.

I get a slight muffled clunk noise from the rear-end during hard shifts... but mine's the rear-diff thumping in my worn-out bushings. Nothing a tranny mount, and rear-diff-subframe lock bolts won't fix. ;)

I hear a wierd sound when in 3rd at about 2250 to 2000 rpms off the gas. It almost sounds like the high picted vibrating hum then a clank thou? Is that kinda the sound you have? I want to think its something in the cluth or tranny

Exhaust on the cross member maybe?

MikeSTI 2005-02-02 10:19 AM

I'll put some padding on it and see other wise I'll just take one of you guru's for a ride and see if it is a similar sound to what you have heard :D

JC 2005-02-02 10:34 AM

Mine's a pretty pronounced clanking that hits around 3k rpms most times. Probably it's resonance frequency or something.
