Oil Catch Can Is A Must

1 Attachment(s)
I thought for the longest time that my catch can was doing nothing..... Well today I firgured I would take a look and see just how much was in it sence I could not see anything in the tube..........

and to my suprise there was atleast an inch of blow-by at the bottom of the can

ArthurS 2005-02-02 12:12 PM

I need one dammit

MikeSTI 2005-02-02 12:19 PM

I also saw a lot of gunk in the lines where it looked like the oil was heat cycled a few times and turn a yellow sappy stuff :?

Dean 2005-02-02 12:23 PM

It looks awful clean... Are you overfilling your oil? I wouldn't think oil with even 100 miles on it would be that clean.

MikeSTI 2005-02-02 12:47 PM

i use the dealers oil :? all i know is somthing is in the can

i really started woundering when i pulled the ic and found a decent amount of oil near the intake manifold. i know that i'm still getting blow-by from some where and think i need a second can or add a tee into the other location

Dean 2005-02-02 01:00 PM

Where are you plumbed to for your can? Might want to check your oil before you leave their lot next time...

it was installed the way Perrin instructed, but I think I might add one more conection so I can get it all

this is how it is suggested to install

sperry 2005-02-02 01:26 PM

I think I should check mine too!

Also, I'm plumbed as in the 1st picture. I always wondered how the "better" way was supposed to go. My only question is what happens to the other side of the new hose... there's now an open tube to the intake!

MikeSTI 2005-02-02 03:32 PM

that person blocked the hole as the air was just going back to the same spot but different location. I also think it the same inlet that was deleted from the Perrin Turbo Inlet Pipe?

MikeSTI 2005-02-02 03:35 PM

If you didn't want to block the hole you could run another tee off the return side to go back to it or get another catch can so each has a single job and you would know witch one was getting more blow-by

 I wouldn't know where to mount a second can! The 1st one is a real tight fit as it is w/ my bugeye projectors!

I be I could rig up a way to route both breathers throught the can. A T on both lines should work I would guess.

Need some clarification here. Not sure if Boxer engines are different than other configurations..

These are on crankcase and/or valve cover breathers, right?

Blow by is only a potential contributornot to oil entering these passages, right?

It is/can be thrown there by internal moiving parts and manifold vs. case pressure differntials can move it during normal operation, right?

I think that's spot on.

I've got a cruise control actuator and cables there... 2002 WRX != throttle by wire.

MikeSTI 2005-02-02 04:35 PM

on the passanger side  on the firewall under the horn

Kevin M 2005-02-02 04:37 PM

He means where the hoses run, not where the cans are.

MattR 2005-02-02 05:03 PM

I'm gonna sit one in the cupholder.

(seriously though), I shuold get one of thsoe.

So where are the Subby breathers in all 3 locations, or only 1 or two of the above? Both heads? I would think an aluminum screen/tube/thingy widget in the verticle portion of the tubing would allow the oil liquid and vapor to collect, and gravity pull it back down into the engine. Where is the return to the intake? After the MAS/MAF isn't it? Do the catch cans then just vent to atmosphere, or does that piss off the ECU for some reason so you have to use the return?

Sorry for the bunch of questions. Catch can experience limited to NA Italian cars. :)

heres the best thing I can give :D
