I don't know about anybody else -- but as a NASCAR fan, I'm stuck to the tv till the Daytona 500 is over. :D

I watched on the big screen there were some mean jimmie johnson fans out.

Me and my sister's boyfriend were tony stewart from the beginning, to bad he couldn't hold off the gordonator.

Ditto.

Of course now since I'm not such a huge NASCAR fan anymore and don't really root for any one driver, I have to respect Gordon for his driving skills. The guy can definitely drive.

I never thought I could, but I was rooting for Tony Stewart...

You Know I am gonna get hell for saying this...lol But .. What Driving skills do you need when you are just going around, and around... lol

Ok maybe keeping the car from hitting the walls at high speeds... lol

I know NASCAR guys get bashed for driving around in circles, but even that takes a lot of skill, concentration & years of practice to be competitive at the top level. It also takes a pretty high degree of intestinal fortitude to drive a car down into Turn-1 at Charlotte at 180mph and hope it sticks (with a concrete wall less than 100ft away). More than is required in a lot of road racing.

I'll say this... in oval track racing, the cars are at the limit a whole lot more than cars are in road racing. That's why when someone drops a little oil on the track, 5 cars go flying into the wall... they're using 10/10ths of their traction.

And Austin's right... it's certainly not as easy as it seems... just driving a slow ass CAM car at Altamont at full tilt over the turn 4 transition onto the front straight is very unnerving. And I nearly wet myself when the back-end of the Legends car I drove at Shasta stepped out!

That said, sports car and open wheel road course racing is far more entertaining to watch IMO.

Nick Koan 2005-02-22 11:25 AM

Yeah, I didn't actually think NASCAR style racing was hard until I tried racing the stock cars in TOCA 2... damn tough.

dknv 2005-02-22 12:16 PM

more ... they need about a 100 times more driving skills than I'll probably ever have. Besides the strength it must take to keep their hands on the steering wheel going in circles with an 800hp monster under them, they have to know when to gas, when to ride the brakes, when to bump-draft, when to try to slingshot around another car, they have to know what to do when the car gets a little wiggly or when they get bumped, and they have to know how to communicate what their car is doing while they're driving. They also have to know the protocol when they're out there, and if they get in trouble, they'd better do everything to keep it out of the way of everybody else.

Yeah, agreed that most of the time its more fun to watch some other types of motorsports. But, the last 10 (13!) laps or so of Daytona was some pretty great racing there at the end.

BOO 2005-02-22 01:52 PM

yeah this is True DKNV but I just think maybe I dont really like it(Nascar) because I guess back in the day(70's) they were in fact actual CARS, whereas today .. its nothing but a LQQK-A-LIKE shell... Doesn't do anything for me ... sorry...

**Edit**
And to think that the roof has to be only This high, the tail/spoiler only this many degrees etc... .. too picky for me maybe for it being a look-a-like shell .. lol

Weasel 22 2005-02-22 06:04 PM

lol on the die Gordon..I wish he would get the F1 ride thats been rumored in the works for him, after he did some open wheel testing..im not even much of a Nascar fan :D

Gordon should move to F1 and replace Shumi at Ferrari, Michael should becoem Subaru's 2nd driver in WRC, Tony Stewart should drop NASCAR and run Sports Cars exclusively, Colin McRae should move to NASCAR and whoop all those country boy's asses, and I should win NSM this season.

Then everything will be right in the racing world.

Kevin M 2005-02-22 06:13 PM

He won't be going to F1. He'd be giving up way to much money, and he'd have to break a lot of contracts which means he probably couldn't come back to Nascar. While I think he could be successful in F1, he wouldn't be Michael Schumaker, so we leave what he has?

Edit: Scott's reply was better.
