Let the modding begin...
Well, I wanted mods, or at least a start, so yesterday I ordered an autometer gauge pod, VDO boost gauge, Joe P XZ MBC and a Godspeed uppipe... YAY for me :) :o
wow.
be carefull with that MBC, I've read some bad stuff about people setting it too high. I have no idea how to set them but I know Scott, Phil, and Matt do. nice job. |
Setting an MBC is not hard at all. Its pretty simple stuff actually - and the Joe P MBC is prolly the best MBC out there - good choice. Just make sure you hook up that boost gauge right and tune away :)

I'd be carefull with anything over stock boost levels until you have engine management. Shoot for 14 psi max boost. Even though that's about the same as stock, you will boost to max in all gears, and it won't back off the boost after peaking the way the stock boost controller does, so it will still be a lot faster.
Also remember that at partial throttle, you will be making a ton of boost w/o the fuel injectors being wide open. Your car can run very lean, and you risk popping her. An EGT gauge would help you to watch for lean conditions. (So would a wide-band A/F gauge but those cost as much as engine managment...) Up here in Reno, we can get away with the higher boost settings since the altitude reduces the O2 content in the air. I'm not sure what the alt is in Bishop, but I'd guess it's closer to sea level, so be careful! You really should invest in at least a Unichip (they can be had for relatively cheap off NASIOC), or even better a ECUTek or the Cobb equivalent. Also GReddy and HKS and the like make their own fuel/boost managment solutions, but I'm not as familiar with them. |
Do you have the stock tubro? If so, then everything should be fine. I bet you can run safe with 18psi (but at that point you'll be blowing nothing but hot air) so, I recommend 16psi. I dont think your small stock turbo can push your stock fuel system to the limit. You may have difficulties reacing 16psi withouth a boost cut defender - Im not familiar with with the "stock" limits of pressure with the WRX. So, you may also want to invest in that.
I hope this makes sense to you guys. I just got my wisdom teeth pulled about 4 hours ago.. and im still feeling kinda free.... Wwwwweeeeeeee   |
17.5+psi = fuel cut.

I believe the stock boost-cut on the WRX is 17psi. I'd be afraid to run boost that high w/o management since spikes can still occure, and will be in the 19psi range!! As it is, I'm only running ~15.5psi, just to keep my car happy. At this altitude, I could prolly get away with 17psi, but I'd rather not risk it... it's plenty fast enuf for me as it is! |
I will be setting it at 15.5 psi (in 3rd gear), seems to be ideal with the ECU and engine... but only after I install the uppipe and get some more efficiency out of the turbo without its evil clogging ways.... the best thing about the MBC is even if i leave it at 14 PSI, I will still see a massive performance increase because ill be seeing a full 14 PSI in 1st gear while now, the ECU cuts it at 9.

hehe, up above I actually sounded like I knew what I was talking about.. YAY for me... now what to order next, i think im going to order an EGT gauge and maybe mesh covers for the fogs... or an STI grill... hmm.. choices choices...
Get an EGT. Your car is not an STI.. so dont be a poser  Hehe.
Speaking of boost pressure and stuff like that - How much CFM does the stock WRX turbo flow? |

Was never gonna have any STI logos on it.. just the grill style.. im gonna order the Carbon Fiber side markers too without the STI logo.
Still.. get the EGT. Go for the greddy recall one. Its pricey, but worth it. Thats what I have. If you I go on thursday ill let you peep it.
Im gonna go with the cheap but effective VDO Cockpit I think... they look like stock gauges which is cool... and did i mention they were cheap? (VDOs are used in Porsche's stock... so i think it will work nicely)... Im not gonna make it to the meet this week sadly.. is a very long drive for me (around 3 1/2 hours) but ill try and make one next month.
Damn.. Where do you live?
On the other side of the Cali/NV border... I live near Mammoth, CA.
spOOln your signature is a bit distracting could you make it smaller?
Well, the boost gauge install has been a massive pain in my ass so far.. not the install, but finding a goddamn T fitting that fits right.. but now.. I finally found one, tonight after the sun goes down, I'll finish the install and install my MBC as well. Not to mention do my cars first oil change :) :o :o
lol, newb.
DSM driver.. hows that for an insult ;)
Dat's right, you better be winkin... :P
Well my WRX came stock with the STI carbon fiber dash and a STI shift knob. That means I can put any STI logo I want on my car plus right now I am as fast or faster then one.
