Why you need rollbar padding...

I was browsing the Miata forums, and was quite amused by this explanation of why padding is necessary.

But Why do I need padding for? Someone explain me?

Go find a 1 meter length of 1.75-inch steel tubing. Have a friend swing it like a baseball bat and whack you in the back of the head with it. If you still don't know why you need padding, then maybe you actually don't need it. ;)

But on most roadster roll bars, there is next to no way for a head, or helmet to come in contact with them, so padding is not very usefull.

I thought it was referring to padding in the pants?

I have no intention of proving or disproving this statement personally, but if I do... I know which side I want to err on.
