WRX TR

From a SOA bulletin (regarding the 2006 WRX TR):

Quote:

We are very excited to announce a new addition to the Impreza WRX line, the WRX TR (Tuner
Ready). The WRX TR Sedan offers all the performance and rally heritage of the WRX Sedan
but at a more affordable price point. The WRX TR will be offered with manual transmission only
and features a manual climate control system, an AM/FM/Single-Disc CD Stereo with 4-
Speakers, and fog light insert covers (the fog lamp kit is optional). MSRP for the WRX TR
Sedan is $23,995
They should remove more and drop the price more I think.

I think it would be cool to see the TR as a cheap Spec-C. Sell it with the 2.5L WRX motor/turbo, but include a non-DCCD 6-speed. Put it on Spec-C suspension. No stereo, no A/C, no sound deadening, no power windows or door locks. Use the thinner, lightweight glass, and toss a roof scoop on it for kicks.

Sell it for around $25k. Then you could grab it, toss an exhaust on it, a turbo, and an intercooler, reflash that thing, and have a lightweight track hungry monster! For less than a stock STi.

I agree Scott. I'd much rather have seen them lighten the STI and remove some more of the amenities.

Classic Subaru - "tuner ready"

Owner to dealer: "hey I had my TR tuned today"
Dealer to Owner: "hey you just voided your warranty"

They couldn't possibly get away with that warranty shit if the name of the car has "Tuner Ready" in the name, could they (at least not as blatantly)? I would think a good lawyer could eat them alive with some kind of false advertising claim...

cody 2005-09-14 12:23 PM

They got away with those old commercials where 0-60 in 5.2 seconds flashed across the screen while they showed a WRX playing in the dirt.

Those 0-60 times were independently produced. Subaru never stated that driving like that was good for the car. They just re-printed the data from Car and Driver.

I don't think that the fact that the figures were derrived by a trusted 3rd party makes it okay to advertise it and then void warranties when people attempted this feat and destroyed their tranny in the process.

I 100% believe that if you mod your car and your mods cause a failure, you have no right claiming warranty service. But if you simply do what the car is advertised as being capable of and fubar the tranny, I think SOA should step up to the plate instead of crying "abuse".

So this is a sad attempt to match the Evo RS or what?

cody 2005-09-14 01:44 PM

I hope not

I think it's more like an attempt to keep selling the WRX at a $24k price, since the introduction of the 2.5L motor has pushed the top of the line WRX to about $30k. I think Subaru just wants to keep the WRX available to the "tuner" market (i.e. broke-ass ricers), especially since the SRT-4 has been discontinued.

It's pretty much just a WRX with RS trim. According to their PR, the idea behind "Tuner Ready" is supposedly to let you add what you want - I think in part because Subaru expects some people to void their waranties immediately anyway. And the highschool kids and ricers can still afford the car since they're not paying more for trim parts that'll get replaced. :P
