WRX Stock Turbos 02-06?
I could go look this up but don't hav the time right now and thought somebody might know off the top of their head...
Have there been any Turbo changes from 02-06 for the WRX? I am assuming the 06 might be different with the 2.5L... |
Not sure about 06, but I believe 02 - 05 are all the same (TD04-13G off the top of my head)
Is there an upgrade in your future? |
I can't find anything that indicates the '06 WRX has anything other than the same TD04-13G that the '02-'05 WRX came with. But I can't guarentee it...
You thinking about update/backdate? Is the '06 gonna be on the same line as the '02? The move to the 2.5L motor is pretty significant... I'd probably wait a bit to make sure no one challenges the rule. It would suck to go to the 2.5L WRX motor only to find out you're now in SM, if your goal is to stay in ESP/STX... (actually, doesn't the 2.5L WRX have to go to STU now?) Also, the update to the '06 is gonna be pretty expensive... IIRC the rules require you to update the motor as a whole unit, no? That means you're gonna need the long-block (since the 2.5L WRX has different AVCS heads), the intake manifold (convert to throttle-by-wire), and a new engine wiring harness/ECU (to control the AVCS and throttle-by-wire). Hell, the swap I'm doing will probably cost about the same, and I'm getting the 6-speed! Either way, I guarentee someone will do it... and someone will protest... I wonder where this will end up in the rules when all the dust settles! |
I'm thinking ESP, and if it is on the same line: Subaru WRX 02'- , then update/backdate applies.
I'm thinking an '06 WRX with remapped ECU may be the STI replacement ESP car of choice. Now what the minimum you will need to do to update an 02 will be the question. I haven't found anything on the turbo spec either... Long block, yes, but intake should not need to be 06 in SP. AVCS, don't know what that might intail. |

Off the top of my head: - Long block (2.5L & AVCS) - Intake Manifold (throttle by wire) - ECU (And you'll need a new reflash license or an '06 AP) - Might be an issue w/ the new emmissions air pump in the up-pipe... I don't think it's a required part per the rules, but who knows what the ECU will do if it's missing. I agree that the '06 WRX will probably be the car to beat in ESP (if it even stays there...) But I'd wait to see how they perform... they may end up in BSP w/ the STI when people realize that a reflashed 2.5L with a TD04 is gonna be only slightly slower than an STI at autocross speeds... in fact, it may have a lag advantage! Think about how fast a 2.5L WRX + intake + exhaust + reflash + intercooler may be! |
Yes, a 2.5 WRX might end up being a real advantage class-wise. Interesting.

SCCA forum members are saying that the 2.5L WRX is getting its own line. And someone is saying (don't know if its true or not) that it is still the td04-13g turbo in the 06 wrx. http://sccaforums.com/forums/160985/ShowPost.aspx |
This was most interesting... I didn't even think of DS... Now that 17" wheels are standard...

Subarus certainly seem to fit well into many categories... kinda like Miata's of years past.
'Course, it doesn't hurt that Subaru made a point to give out free SCCA memberships w/ the cars, and sponsored lots of big events. There may be many cars more capable than the WRX/STi that we just don't know about since no one's made an effort to race 'em... but thanks to the pseudo-factory support, there's a great knowledge base out there for making these things fast! |

So with UD/ BD, can you use 17's in DS now, that would be a huge help? That was the only reason I ran STX back in the day.

There is no UD/BD in Stock! Only SP for cars on the same line...
