My test lap in the East Bay.

So I got my test track all figured out for breaking in my new motor while I'm down here in the Bay...

43 miles round trip. I ran it three times tonight, take's about 50 minutes for a lap... not exactly the Nurburgring.

For those who know the Bay, here's the lap:

East/South on Camino Tassajara from my parent's house
East on 580 to Livermore
South/West on 84 to Sunol
North on 680 to Danville
East back on Camino Tassajara

So, that's 130 miles tonight, plus my trip to Sac and back yesterday, and my shorter trips around the Bay this week, and I'm about 650 miles into the break in. The nice thing is that I got the car at 54500 miles on the clock, so the motor's broken in at 55500.

I want to start seeing better times now.

84 can be fun but most of the time it sucks since it's clogged with traffic. Damn I'm glad I don't live there anymore...

Dude, you should so go out Crow Canyon, and come back Polomares & Niles Canyon... Ok, may be slower average speed, but more fun...

Tuesday night I tried the Niles Canyon/Crow Canyon loop. But it's too slow... average speed in the 30's and 40's... it'll take a month to get my 1000 miles. Wenesday I drive to the top of Mt. Diablo, 20 minutes to go 8 miles! Not efficient, or fun at all (bumpy as hell, dirt all over the road... no guard rails...)

Plus, the car isn't exactly fun to drive... a 4300 rpm rev limit means it's impossible to stay in the boost, and all those twisty canyon roads are perpetually wet this time of year. No reason to risk sliding off into a ditch ruining my FMIC during my break in!

Dean 2005-12-29 04:51 PM

I thoght that might be the case...

You could put some miles on by driving up tonight for the meet and back...

Good idea. You wanna come down here and bring me a set of snow tires, and stock suspension, and help me swap it out so I don't get trapped in Reno? :P

AtomicLabMonkey 2005-12-29 05:11 PM

Drive it down to SLO, there's no snow in sight.

tysonK 2005-12-29 05:19 PM

Yeah there is huge weather system coming in for the next couple days, I hope you make it back someday Scott.

MattR 2005-12-29 05:20 PM

Not a bad idea... that'll get me damn close to my break in target! I'm gonna try to swap my rear strut mounts for those Cusco ones. Call me at about 8 or 8:30. I'll try to meet you out there.

...is there gonna be anything to do? We should find a bar and shoot a round or two of pool or something.

GST Mike 2005-12-29 11:56 PM

Sorry about that rev limit Scott :p

Glad the break in is going ok for you!..

I think my car with the 500/450 springs, and the summer tires in the wet would be a death trap with a higher red line.

As it is, I gave up after only 2 laps tonight. 84 in the wet is a mess... parts of the hillside are running off over the road, leaving a slippery muddy scum. Plus it's near impossible to see with the combination of wet glass, oncoming headlights, and the inability to heep my head stable over the bumps with such stiff suspension. I figured, better to take more time breaking the car in than to crash it.

Hey Mike... will 800 miles be enough? I'm just about there... I could have the car back at Gruppe-S tomorrow (Friday). I'll give you a call.

So Scott has his car back finally. It begs the questions, what's easier to make fun of someone who wishes they had their bugeye, or someone who has one and spent way too much money on it? I don't know the answer, but I think we will all have fun finding out. I may have to finish part II of my Impreza history to commemorate the occasion.

Are you towing it back or gonna try to drive it through the snow? Glad to see you've almost got her back home.

JC

cody 2005-12-30 11:11 AM

I bet he picks up a Titan just to tow it. :P
