Is there any place you can't advertise?

I seriously have felt a lack of ads walking from my car to the store I am about to buy something from. I've been wondering when someone would do something about it.

The parking lot: it isn't just for parking anymore.

In the latest example of advertisers turning space with no commercial value into something valuable, a company is manufacturing printed vinyl ads that cover the lines between spaces in parking lots. They're unobtrusive from a distance but impossible to miss when standing over them.

The ads' creator says they're effective because most people in a retailer's parking lot are there specifically to purchase something.

"Over 60 percent of all purchases are impulse in nature, and so if you can garner that last chance to communicate your message, you're going to be a heck of a lot better off," says Greg Gorman, founder of Parking Stripe Advertising.

Gorman, who developed the ubiquitous Budweiser "frogs" and "Clydesdale" campaigns, hatched the idea for his newest venture during a brainstorm session at his Denver-based marketing firm, Commotion LLC. After challenging his employees to come up with new places to put ads, Gorman, 46, looked out of his office window and flippantly suggested the stripes on the parking lot. It took him a second or two to realize he'd just stumbled upon a potential moneymaker.

A great place for a tire ad.

Last week I put my card into the reader at a gas pump, turned around to start pumping the gas, and was rewarded for my efforts by a pimp-slap upside the head from the 150dB wall of advertising noise emanating from the speaker hidden in the pump. I had to stagger back to the driver's door & pull myself inside to escape this sonic assault and attempt to clean up the grey matter & blood slushy leaking out of my ears. After my heart rate dropped down below 205 and I could form lucid thoughts again, I realized that someday, somewhere, I will probably be arrested for vandalism & property destruction when I finally snap and beat an automated ad machine to a twisted, sparky pulp.

Eh, sounds good to me. Maybe now the dumbshits will stay in the lines when they park and stop dinging my car.

JonnydaJibba 2006-02-07 09:07 PM

An Sti has ability to smoke its tires that is inversely and directly proportional to how sticky said tires are. ;) I'd love to see an Sti on the LGT RE92s sometime...

MattR 2006-02-08 06:41 AM
