Place to get brakes done?

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good place in the Reno area I can get my brakes done for my '03 Outback?

sperry 2006-02-16 03:06 PM

I like to use my garage. i.e. Brakes aren't that hard to do if you're mechanically inclined, have a basic toolset, and jackstands. Once I learned how to do a brake job, I vowed never to pay for it again... shops charge *way* too much for what's essentially a very easy job. However, I wouldn't recommend doing them yourself if you've never done them before. Get a friend that's experienced to show you how to do it.

If you have to take the car somewhere, Independant Auto in Sparks has a good reputation, and is very pro-Subaru, but they're not cheap... probably a couple hundred for a brake job (including parts). You may want to order up pads and rotors online and just get them installed to save some cash, assuming you know what you need.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. I'm new to the area so I don't know much. And Hubby is semi-capable, did put brakes on a Dodge Omni once, but "doesn't really want to do it."
I'd do them myself but I don't like working on cars, gets my hands too dirty...I'm such a girl. ;)

Sid's alignment and brake on 4th street is pretty good as well. If you want a good deal, tell Sid Debbie sent you, if you want to pay retail plus a little extra, use my name... :(

How many miles do you have that you need a brake job on an 03 Outback already?

Oh, and you probably only need pads which should be cheaper than having the rotors turned. Don't let them convince you otherwise. The will swear up and down that if you change pads, you should have the rotors turned... This is BS, and just makes you need rotors sooner.

MPREZIV might also be willing to cut you a deal for his time to do them, and I'm sure he won't hurt you or do unnecessary stuff.

Well except for the HURT YOU part

Sid does do some good work, when he has the time, if you have some really cool raider stuff, he will really kick you a deal!

Sperry is the Independent your talking about on Harvard or is there another one?

MattR 2006-02-16 04:11 PM

No, Independent Auto is on Bergin Way in Sparks. Right off of Glendale and McCarran.

khail19 2006-02-16 04:34 PM

Independent Specialists is the one on Harvard, they are a Honda/Acura shop.

Assuming Trisca wants to order brake pads online, what brand do you recommend? I doubt the Outback ever gets driven agressively. Original equipment? Where's a good site to get Outback stuff?

Kevin M 2006-02-16 05:46 PM

For non-aggressive driving, I loved my Axxis Deluxe Plus. Zero dust, no noise, good fade resistance (for what it is) and they're nice and cheap.

I think it's funny that no one ever spells my name right on here!

My time's usually a little screwed up, but I'd be glad to help out and slap some new pads on there. Saturdays are usually my best days.

Hell, if you bought pads, and we met up on a Saturday at my work (Nissan of Reno, on Kietzke) I'd be willing to put the pads in and check everything out for next to nothing!

I usually let members decide what they want to pay me. Lunch or something is the usual bargaining chip. It's fine by me! This stuff's easy by my standards, and I really don't mind helping out! If you would like my assistance, just let me know!

Yea I know thats where they were, I was just wondering if was the same place. I have used Independent Specialties, they do excellent work there too.

I am taking my car in for a tune up and to have the catalytic conv checked, and the place I bought my car is footing the bill. But the owners of this lot are totaly subaru people and have been for 20 yrs or so, and they say this place(not independent) is the best in town, as soon as I know who they are I will spread that info along.

I second that opinion. I had Axxis Ultimates on the SVX and all they did was piss me off w/ the dust. I went to Axxis Deluxe (or were they Metal Masters?) on all 4 corners and the car brakes just as good (considering I don't flog the car) but has next to zero dust.

Plus I can get Axxis pads through StopTech, which is where I order all my brake stuff from.

Wow, you guys are awesome, I am so glad Cody told me to join. I just may take you up on that sweet offer MPREZIV...I'll look into getting some pads.

By the way Dean, it has 54,200 miles on it. I bought it at around 45,000 and I put 75 on it everyday commuting to work and back (I live in Fernley & work in Reno).

MPREZIV 2006-02-17 10:05 AM

Trisca: Just hit me up here and we can set up a time to take care of it! No problem! Like I said, just glad to help out! I know how expensive auto repair can be!

Frankly, I'm pretty proud that people here hold my work in good standings! I appreciate the praise guys!

Trisca 2006-02-17 10:33 AM

MPREZIV, Will do!
Yes, auto repair can get outrageous, and considering I need a new windshield soon that car is really dinging my wallet right now! I just discovered a crack last week, I have no idea how it happened, totally bogus.
Thanks again!
