Boost gauge

My pop just scored a boost gauge for the LGT, and we were wondering where everyone is getting there pressure readings from? Nick? Anybody else? Thanks guys.

Chris.

You can pretty much tee it off any of the properly sized hoses that come off the intake manifold. I helped Nick with his install, but for the life of me, I wouldn't be able to describe where we did it... however, it was very obvious once the cowl was off the intercooler.

sp00ln 2006-04-23 08:15 PM

There is also a pressure source coming off of the turbo, you can tap that as well.

bruspeed 2006-04-24 06:47 AM

I saw the wastegate, and decided that wouldn't be the best place for it but on the drivers side there is a line that runs from the intercooler to some sort of sensor, I think we'll try that.

khail19 2006-04-24 08:02 AM

I tapped the line going to the fuel pressure regulator because it was fairly close in size to the tee I had for my vacuum gauge. Anything coming from the manifold will work though.

Nick Koan 2006-04-24 08:21 AM

I could take a picture if you want. Scott ended up making me a custom Tee from off the bov.

Please. Thanks.

Chris.

I'll get it after work. What kind of gauge did your dad get?

It's nothing special, just a VDO that I had from the Volvo.

Wow, its not that hard! Its not the wastegate either, its the pressure source off of the turbo. Fuel pressure line (where I have mine) intake manifold, or the pressure source off of the turbo, any thing will work. Time to get your hands dirty.

Hey, you know where the BOV is, right? That line is also coming off of the intake manifold. You could also use that.

Here, check this out - I'm assuming that the turbo legacy engine has the same layout as a turbo impreza.

Nice picture, just make sure you don't tap any of those three hoses circled on the right, unless you're looking for fuel pressure.

BTW: The legacy GT looks nothing like the impreza... they put this goofy square intercooler and a bunch of plastic/composite crap all over the motor. Even the intake manifold is plastic!

There's a question mark on the water tank if you cant see it :P But if thats the FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator), then there is a pressure source that is attached to that that comes off of the intake manifold. So, yes, you can probably use one of those three lines (if it is the FPR).

The Legacy GT engine looks like the impreza engine if you ask me - it just has a bunch of black plastic shit on it.

No, those three lines are the fuel lines. All three have gasoline in them. Having taken them off and gotten soaked in fuel before, I'm sure of it. :P  (Kids, follow the instructions, disconnect the fuel pump and run the car till it burns off all the fuel in the lines before disassembling!)

The manifold pressure line that runs to the FPR isn't visible in that picture, it comes up from under/behind the FPR in that picture.

On the LGT, if you take off the IC cowl and find the blow off valve, you can tap for boost there I believe. It should look just like the BOV on that picture of the WRX, just in a different location. I think that's where Nick and I tapped for his boost gauge.

sp00ln 2006-04-25 10:16 AM

DONT USE THE THREE CIRCLED LINES TO THE RIGHT WITH THE QUESTION MARK BY THEM. THEY HAVE FUEL IN THEM.

Thanks Scott, that was close ;)

Oh, as far as the fuel thing goes - you're still going to have pressure in it. I've ran the car until it wont go any longer when I installed my injectors, but fuel still went everywhere when I took off the fuel rail :(

Without the pump running you probably only burned off the fuel on the rail side of the FPR. All the fuel in the return side was still just sitting there underpressure?

All I know is that I was just replacing my fuel filter. I had the hoses wrapped in towels to control any spray, and pulled off what I thought would be the presurized side. It didn't spray at all, so I assumed the whole system wasn't presurized. Turns out there's a check valve in the filter or something 'cause I yanked off the next line w/o a towel over it and got doused. I damn near dropped my cigarette!

Yeah, that sounds right. I only remember it coming from one side. It wasnt much, but it still made me and the garage smell like fuel. Actually, one time when I installed my AFPR, I didn't secure the fuel feed line from the tank too well, so when I started my car, fuel spewed out in what seemed like gallons from the bottom of my car.

Scott, you shouldn't smoke. ;)

I don't smoke. Except when working on the fuel system, you know for comedic value.

Nick Koan 2006-04-25 01:12 PM

Damn, I forgot to take the picture last night. I'll write myself a note to remember.

sp00ln 2006-04-25 05:52 PM

Good.

Hope this makes sense.

bruspeed 2006-04-26 06:36 AM

Thanks for all your help guys. :)

sp00ln 2006-04-26 07:13 AM

Is that intake manifold plastic?!

Kevin M 2006-04-26 07:41 AM

Yeah. It's beneficial in several ways. Heat transfer, weight, cost.
