AC Clutch Sqwwwweeeeeek!
Well after taking the old subie on a short 1800 mile drive last week, then promply adding another 340 miles as soon as I got home, I noticed the AC Clutch bearing is squeaking whilst the AC is engaged. I think Summer has arrived <crosses fingers> and I definately dont want to be without AC.
Any one know the going rate to replace the AC Unit, is the clutch something that can be replaced without replacing the whole compressor? And last be not least, any of you racers have an AC unit that you took off your race car just sitting around the garage that needs a new home? :?: |
eBay and our "brother" Cory... That is how I did the Ford... Just be prepared to be without your car for a month or so... :)
Clutch noise may be clutch, or failing internals in the compressor. Probably easier to do both with the right equipment with 100+K miles on it. (I think that's what you said.) |
I had some noise recently as well, but it was just the idler pulley.
|
I can hook it up if you get the parts, and I'll try to not make it a month this time!!!
|
You're sure it's the AC unit and not just a loose belt, right? Sorry, but just had to make sure...
|
I am pretty sure its the clutch, stops squeakin when I shut the ac off and it sounds just like the honda when I lost the AC unit on that one, when the clutch on the ac is spinning you can hear it. No squeaky under the same rpm with the ac off.
It wouldnt be a bad idea to replace the belt while I am at it, since it does have 100+ and It doesnt have a belt change in the history I have on it. |
ebay Deals...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Subar...spagenameZWDVW http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Subar...spagenameZWD1V Could also call Rancho Cordova dismantlers for a price. Probably need a new drier, and whatever goo besides refrigerant Subies need for lubrication. :) |

I might even call Lithia to see what it would be like to be raped in broad daylight. It might be worth it to me to have a new one installed. |
$70 a pound is for R12. A WRX uses R134a, which is like $10 a pound.

lemme know if you still need help. if you have gotten a leak (hint, hint) you wontn't need to pay a refer shop to evacuate the system. then have someone (me, you, anyone) replace the compressor. you will then need to replace your rec/drier. and have a shop stick a vacuum on the system, and charge it with refer. or i have acess to a vacuume pump, but it's in phoenix(overnite ups). a shop will put your system on a vacuum on your system for ~15 minutes. that enough to evaporate the moisture entered your system in the time it takes to replace a component. unless you pull a vacuum for longer than a few hours. enough nutshells? |
i type too slow.

100% ineffective. Pay me in Virgins please.

Just so you guys know, current refridgerant pricing of 12 oz cans.
R134a - $7.99 or $10.65 per lb R-12 - $31.99 or $42.65 per lb This is if you purchase it at Napa. Buying from a shop doing A/C work will result in getting ass raped. If it was me I'd take up Cory's offer, then you know it's getting done right and he's a cheap date! :D |
I think I concur with the "taking up Cory's offer" idea. I like the fact I know Cory and have watched him in action on many occasions, he does wonders with Muranos.
So far, new from Subaru....$664.83 Airport Auto $200.00 Rancho Cor $150 plus exchange Ebay, Baja Unit not compatible so Lithia says. Last year when I called around to have the Honda recharged the price for R12 was $55 per lb. So I just figured it went up rather than down, but I didn't realize that all new cars use R134 thus supply and demand has dropped for R12, and you can convert your R12 car pretty easily. |
My compressor went on me now too. It was squeaking last fall like a banshee, now it is toast.
