Sounds like I'm gonna need to buy a truck via private party, cause I really hate paying "tac".

They were never collecting that before, at least with me.
Its technically called USC tax anyways.

The last 3 cars i've bought and registered down in minden they never charged me sales/usc tax. all 3 times in a row. :) one in 2001, one in 2003 and one in 2005 all imprezas. or maybe imprezas have been exempt the whole time ?

Every car I have titled/registered in NV has been charged Sales/Use TAX. I'm not sure how you could avoid it until now. It is a state law...

I don't know either, as i went onto the DMV web site each time to figure out what i thought the tax would be, then i made sure i had enough in my checking account before going down, and each time i was happily suprized with a fairly low registration figure. signed the check. put my plates on, and happily went on my way. each time i clearly told the dmv worker "i just bought a used car from a private party, i'de like to register it " ? hope dmv workers don't read our board ... eeks :P lol

When I tried to register my old 1969 F250 for the first time. DMV tried to get me to pay sales taxes based on what the original sales price was. I laughed at them and told them that it would ammount to more then what I paid for the damn thing. Bought the damn truck for $500, they wanted me to pay about 50-60 $'s more in taxes. So, I had to get a salesman from one of the local dealerships down here to write out that the damn thing wasn't worth anything.

Funny thing is, it still isn't worth anything.

I work at the Dept. of Taxation and I just found this out last week! And like 30% of the people working here are transplants from DMV. So I really should have known this a long time ago. Go me!
