Insurance Exclusions 2006

I was going to revive a thread from 2004 but decided to start anew...

They were kind enough to send me a full new policy when I added the STI rather than just amendments that have happened. If you read the 2004 thread, it was very strict about even being "at a track"

At least my Safeco policy has relaxed that exclusion. Here are my pertinent exclusions for 2006.

Quote:

Part A - Liability Coverage
Exclusions.B
We do Not provide Liability Coverage for the ownership, maintenance, or use of:
...
4. Any vehicle, located inside a facility designed for racing for the purpose of:
a. competing in; or
b. practicing or preparing for;
any prearranged or organized or speed contest

Part B - Medical Payments Coverage
Exclusions
We do Not provide Medical Payments Coverage for any insured for bodily injury:
...
11. Sustained while occupying any vehicle, located inside a facility designed for racing for the purpose of:
a. competing in; or
b. practicing or preparing for;
any prearranged or organized or speed contest

Part D - Coverage For Damage To Your Auto
Exclusions
We will not pay for:
...
11. Loss to your covered auto or any non-owned auto, located inside a facility designed for racing for the purpose of:
a. competing in; or
b. practicing or preparing for;
any prearranged or organized or speed contest
The way I read this, Audi/HPDE/etc events which are not timed, non-competitive, and might even qualify you for discounts are covered.

Pretty much anything else that involves competition or even the future expectation of competition is not.

Again, that is my interpretation of my exclusions in my policy. I take no responsibility for you, your car, your policy, etc. etc... Your mileage may very.

Discuss....

doesn't that sum it up.

All that aside Dean, what do you think of the rates on the STI. My insurance is insane for that car - 3X the porsche!

For 6 months, the STI is $1.30 more than the WRX, $61.20 more than the A4...

No, the rest of the section says "competition, preparation, or practice" so I think he's right. Dean at least is covered for HPDEs, PDXs, and club track days. Club Trials are of course specifically excluded.

I think the insurance companies have pretty much concluded that non-timed events are no more risky than insuring you for the drive to the track, just as we've all said before.

tysonK 2006-05-19 08:19 PM

The way I understand it, if you were say at Sears Point because it(the racetrack) not the event was designed for racing then you are screwed.

The way it reads to me is, It's where you are that excludes you in addition to what you do.

Kevin M 2006-05-19 08:33 PM

It's the "for the purpose of" at the end that un-excludes the non-competition stuff. The way you're reading it, you wouldn't be covered if you're in hte parking lot at Seca for ALM or something. :(

The parking lot wasn't "designed for racing" the track was, and that's where you would wad up your car.

Yeah, it says that they will deny coverage of any vehicle that is going to be driven competitively inside a facility designed for racing. The "for the purpose of" part refers to the car, not the track.

The catch is that one could argue that the phrase, "practicing or preparing for any prearranged or organized or speed contest," would apply to non-timed events under the assumption that you are attending such an event to gain experience for competitive events. Which would be true for most of us, wouldn't it? :lol:

Interestingly, it could also be argued that our autocross course at Stead is not a facility designed for racing - it's an airfield.

So has anybody looked at their policy to see if the wording is the same?

Kevin M 2006-05-19 10:03 PM

My renewal packet should be here any day.

That was the same for me for the first six months, then they doubled it when they realized they were still listing it as an impreza.

Ah maybe I'm just getting screwed, what is your insurance?

They have it listed as an Impreza WRX STI so no trouble there. Safeco... I get the jillion car discount though. :)

I have three cars and it still is painful compared to the other cars. So either I'm getting a screaming deal on the other cars or screwed on the STI. Time for another call to the agent!
