Saturn Sky Verdict?

I love how it looks. 177 HP, RWD, Uses a Broken Social Scene song in commercial, Bilsetin Shocks, cool.

And don't just say buy a miata. jesus christ.

Kevin M 2006-05-19 08:34 PM

Sky>new MX5 IMO, but it's close. The turbo option makes it a no brainer though, if you're looking for a relatively quick roadster. The MX-5 still has a couple hundred pounds of weight advantage.

tysonK 2006-05-19 08:38 PM

What do you mean Turbo option? Turbo the 2.4L that's in the Saturn?

Nick Koan 2006-05-19 08:39 PM

Sky Redline will be hotter then all.

Turbocharged direct injection 2.0L Ecotec IIRC. ~250hp I think.

Kevin M 2006-05-19 08:40 PM

Yeah, 2.0 ecotec turbo, 260/260 at the crank.

Nick Koan 2006-05-19 08:41 PM

just need to buy opel badges like nobody's business :p

Kevin M 2006-05-19 08:41 PM

And I'd still have to see a Sky and Solstice both in person before deciding which one I like better.

tysonK 2006-05-19 08:41 PM

Well I don't see those for sale yet? When do they come out? That ecotec engine is badass from what I've seen.

I don't know why but I'd rather drive a Saturn than a Pontiac.

I wonder if the Saturn will be cheaper to insure.

Kevin M 2006-05-19 08:45 PM

Roseville has at least one. Reno might too, but their website sucks goatass.

No, it's listed at $23k.

On the Saturn site it's listed as a Future Vehicle.

The sky>pontiac crap. I have ridden in a sky and they are quick and fairly well put together considering it cost 25k for one. Some people complain about build quality which I just couldn't understand.

SpecB#127 2006-05-20 08:24 AM

I have only seen the Solstice in person (well driving around at least). It was definitely an eye-catcher, but I do not know if I would ever own one. The write-up on the Sky in this month's C/D had a lot of praise for the vehicle.

SlickNick112 2006-05-20 12:01 PM

Solstice is out and for sale and have only seen the Sky on a transport truck one day. Looks very nice in person. Very hot car. Don't like the look of the Solstice as much as the Sky.

I like... I like... How are the internals on that thing?

Duckie 2006-05-21 11:57 AM

From what I have gheard, pretty solid. There was a guy on the lotus board running around in a built one with 280ish horse before he sold it to get an elise.

The 2.0 ecotec:

Turbocharging system

A unique, dual-scroll turbocharger is partnered with an air-to-air intercooling system to provide up to approximately 20 psi (1.25 bar) of power-enhancing boost. The dual-scroll turbocharger delivers nearly instant response, as dual exhaust passages from the engine to the turbine housing guide exhaust gas to the turbine. This reduces lag time, or spool-up, at low rpm.

Quote:

  • An auxiliary oil cooler that is approximately 30 percent smaller than similar-capacity oil coolers used on other engines.
  • Piston-cooling oil jets spray the underside of each piston with a continuous bath of engine oil, increasing longevity by reducing engine operating temperatures.
  • Redesigned cylinder head with structural improvements and new multi-layer steel gasket.
  • New camshafts with optimized lobe profiles.
  • Enhanced lubrication system to provide for the extra requirements of the camshaft phasers and piston-cooling jets, along with a deeper oil sump to handle the higher potential cornering forces.

Damn, looks like a pretty sweet little lump. And 20 psi from the factory? Dang.

bruspeed 2006-05-22 11:05 AM

I have been oogling those cars for awhile now, The Redline will be the most awesome bang for the buck car out there, at least as far as roadsters are concerned. The New Miata can't even compare IMHO, even the Mazdaspeed version.

zpeed 2006-05-23 06:29 AM

It's look to big...fat to me. I stick with my dream S2000.

MPREZIV 2006-05-23 06:36 AM

I never thought I'd say this, but Saturn FTW! I've had a chance to see them both in person, and the Sky is SO much better looking than the Solstice.

I still want a 6 liter GTO though...

Kevin M 2006-05-23 06:44 AM

That motor fits in the sky and solstice... ;)
