Filter Elements

I'm sure everyone has seen one or two reviews for filters. well here's two more
http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/
Apexi FTW - I haven't heard of Apexi Power myself.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest2.htm (flow test only, K&N FTW)

Which filter elements do people prefer ?

Any links to Great filter studies?

I'd still be using OEM drop-in if I hadn't gotten the K&N drop-in for free with my swaybar. I hear OEM drop-in is t3x r0x0r cuz it's made by purolator, just like the OEM oil filters.

K&N drop in x 1, K&N FPIK x 1, Cool Blue x 1, Fram paper x 2

according to what i've read k&n flows so well(when clean) that it doesn't filter enough. and when oil is tested from a vehicle using a k&n it has excessive sulfer content. i don't know how that affects the an oil's lubristic properties, but it doen't sound good, for an engine running high pressures. but i don't remember where i found that.

and from experience i like k&n for it's re-cleanability and will continue to use it on my uncharged(lower operating presure) vehicle. foam filters may filter well, but i think they just plain suck. rather don't let the engine suck as well. sence my turbo car is not highly moded, i will continue to use the paper filter that was engineered for the car. when i am able to use all that extra airflow from a cone filter, or better, a different intake will be considered.

so, what are you making now alex?

I've got the Blitz filter in that article there. Kinda concerning that it did the worst in the dirt filtering test...

A1337STI 2006-06-07 08:25 AM

I've heard of the sulfer problem also, however i haven't found any InterWeb sites that discuss it. if i could find an Apexi filter element that would fit onto my intake I'de consider it . (only when i can get a tune like same day)

I think my next few mods may just be cosmetic / audio related. Audio i at least know my component sets from my capcitors. and cosmetic... i have no design sense ,but i'm thinking about buying some Blue sparco mud flaps (very very cheap) , although my eyesore Red flaps are growing on me, too bad they are an orange based red, and not a blue based red. :| maybe i'll post a pic for the amusement of others :)

I'm pretty sure the sulfur comes from gasoline, not through the air filter. The EPA has a big caniption over the sulfur in gas...

http://yosemite1.epa.gov/opa/admpres...a?OpenDocument

Not a whole lot of airborne sulfur out there.

Kevin M 2006-06-07 10:53 AM

The implication is that the sulfur comes from the filter oil I guess?

that's what i was thinking too, but i have no literature to back it up.

Kevin M 2006-06-07 11:49 AM

Actually I'm mildly embarassed to have even suggested it. If the oil was like 50% sulfur, there still wouldn't be enough coming off of the filter, passing through the engine, and ending up in the oil via blow-by to make enough of an effect to cause engine damage.

Dean 2006-06-07 12:58 PM

Right you are Ken. :)

A1337STI 2006-06-07 01:05 PM

So then the K&N = Sulfur rumor is debunked ?

Kevin M 2006-06-07 02:12 PM

It was never properly bunked. ;)
