Sniper shooting in Reno

So, this morning a Judge was shot by a sniper in downtown Reno (can't believe no one posted about it yet).

I just read an article which kinda freaks me out, but it sounds like the main suspect was last seen in the Double Diamond area. And not only that, but a body possibly connected to the sniper attack was found in the Townhouses across the way from my place too. The body was found around 3:00pm, and I was home waltzing between 2:30-3:00 looking for a tow truck that was supposed to take my car to the autobody shop. Thinking back, I do remember an ambulance there.

From what I can deduce, Darren Roy Mack is the main suspect in the sniper case. He is suspected of shooting the judge that was part of his divorce case and also shooting his ex-wife.

Scott's GF also works at Fleur de Lis, so there is even more info aparently.

Yea, very freaky. As soon as I heard family court, my first thought was divorce. Just nuts.

My GF is the Assistant Propery Manager at FdL. Here's the email she sent me at like 3pm:

So 8 or 9 cops come in here and there's so many that I drive over to see what's going on (no ambulance or fire trucks) and I end up in the middle of guns drawn... huge rifles and all kinds of craziness! I knew this was a bad day. I ran the hell outta there as they surrounded the building. I wonder if it has anything to do with that sniper shooting downtown a few hours ago that left a judge shot four times... yeesh... I'll be hearing about this forever...
I talked to her about 30 minutes later, and she said she was at home eating lunch but was planning on heading back. As of 5pm she didn't answer her phone, so I'm assuming she's still dealing w/ the BS. In addition, when I drove past there a little after 5pm, there was an NBC satalite truck setting up, so I'm sure this'll be on the news.

Ironically, the 1st thing I heard about this was from qksubi's wife who called my cell phone 'cause she heard there was shit going down at FdL on her police scanner. She told me the cops had found a body in one of the garages at FdL, so this Mack guy probably capped someone else, assuming he's really the sniper. 'Course my GF told me she knows that guy, and he's some sort of ex-special forces soldier, so it seems a little more than coincidental.

A guy I work with was at the courthouse when it happened trying to get out of a traffic ticket. They locked down the building and he was stuck there all day. When they finally let him go, they wouldn't let him take his car from the nearby parking lot (where they think the judge was shot from). He has to get a taxi back there tomorrow to get it.

The main suspect has a son, Rory, that I used to coach over at Nevada Basketball Academy. I don't remember the dad though. Crazy shit. Mom was good looking if I remember correctly.

This is rather grisly, not sure how much information is too much information open to the public.

6 degrees of separation.

This is a grisley situation. Rory was with my boss's wife and her son, along with Rory's grandmother in Elko over the weekend. At a qualifying event for skeet and trap shooting, only to come home and have this happen. When I was in High School, my buddy dated Mack's sister and we used to hang out at their house in Washoe Valley. This was while his parents still owned the palace. To top it off, one of the ladies that does restringing of beaded stuff, pearls and such is the mom of the Asst Dist Attorney that was assigned this case.

Darren was always kind of a prick back then, spoiled, arrogant, rich kid.

They catch this guy or what?

Nick Koan 2006-06-14 12:19 PM

Nope. He's still on the lam.

Last I heard, they are extending the search to Sacramento and the Bay Area.

JonnydaJibba 2006-06-14 12:21 PM

I heard on the radio today that the CHP had a report that his car had been seen in Sacto. They searched the area for 45 minutes before giving up. Also CHP has issued an all-points bulletin for the vehicle he is driving.

sp00ln 2006-06-14 12:23 PM

How's the judge doing? Last I heard he was ok, for being shot in the chest with a rifle. What kind of rifle was used anyways?

Ezdno 2006-06-14 12:25 PM

They havent issued the ballistics on the rifle yet, but apparently one of Darren credit cards was used to buy airline tickets in Sac. No word on where too, or how many. The guy has mass money though. If he gets out of the States he is probably gone forever.

La radio said he MAY HAVE (edited due to my stupidity) used it to rent the car he is in from Sacto Int'l on Monday, I didn't hear anything bout tickets. I mean if the authorities know he used it then, they would probably know he used it if he bought a plane ticket and would just wait for him there..

Nick Koan 2006-06-14 01:03 PM

Well, he left a rental car in the Reno-Tahoe international as well, without even (to all acounts) entering the building. It could just be a false trail he's leading people on.

The dude is probably on a beach in South America already threatening to spend his traveler's checks at another establishment.

Yeah. There's a driver that knew him, and whose parents know his. Evidently he has a pilot's license and all, so he may as well not be in the area anymore..

'course that's if this driver's not telling dramatic porky pies.

zpeed 2006-06-15 08:22 AM

This could be another movie. damn..

Well, America's Most Wanted was already poking around Fleur de Lis. My GF told them to get bent.

But it'll probably be a movie of the week on TNT or Lifetime or something in a year, depending on if the cops catch the guy to provide an ending to the script.

Duckie 2006-06-15 11:05 AM

I have known him for years. He is an incredibly intelligent man and he has the means to evade the police. I will come out and say it now, he will NOT be caught.

I just really want to know what made him snap...he cared about his family more than ANYTHING.

Ezdno 2006-06-15 11:20 AM

I heard that after filing for bankruptcy he sold some assets but rumour had it that there were several bank accts unaccounted for. A cpa who was up until last week under police protection was successful in finding 4 accts worth millions, and he was said to have access to $250000 in cash at any given moment. The thing that baffles me is if losing his family made him snap...being on the run for the rest of his life basically gets the same result.

When your in a business that pays pennies on the dollar to purchase or make loans on items, you accumulate alot of dinero!

With his picture plastered everywhere (and he's got a distinctive look), you'd think he'd be in hiding for quite some time. Until he got a plastic surgeon to alter his looks & dye or shave his hair or something.

Money. Or giving money to someone who wants to cheat him....

I believe he's out of the country.

Joeyy 2006-06-22 03:50 PM

Danita Cohen just said hat they got him in Mexico and that He's not fighting extradition, Whatever that means. She said he's coming back on American Airlines. Thats an odd detail too have when there was nothing else to report.
link to yesterdays story and one more link
