I have 2 half worn tires...
I have 2 half worn 225/45/17 RT615's and a set of Rota 17X7.5 wheels. If this were a 2WD vehicle, I'd simply buy 2 new RT615's and mount all 4 and be happy. However, since I intend to drive the RT615's on the street sometimes during the summer (as well as AutoX on them), I don't want to risk damaging the center diff by running different OD tires.
What should I do? Shave the new ones? Sell the half worn ones? |
If the remaining two have enough tread, yeah, call Edge Racing and ask for two more shaved to match.
|
They have 45% but it's all AutoX miles...
I'll get a price from Edge Racing at my lunch. |
Edgeracing doesn't shave tires according to the CSR I just talked to. 2 tires shipped is $259.70.
Is there any online store that sells used tires? |
You don't want to buy used tires, and it's hard to get tires shaved locally.
Where did everybody get their shaved RA1s? |

Yeah, but they don't sell 615s, nor do they let you bring in your own to be shaved last I heard. And I think Frisby/sierra might be who I meant when I said Edge Racing. :o

Try Sunshine Alignment & Brake, they had a tire shaver last time I had mine done (albeit 2 or 3 years ago).

Retread place in Sparks also shaves/grinds tires. I've use both and I think the sparks place knows what they are doing more from the end products I've gotten and my discussions with both.
The ground ones look a little fuzzy, and the cut ones look slightly "carved" but both wear smooth quickly. They have to be unmounted for grinding, and mounted for cutting, but both places do that as well if you want. Grinding was cheaper, faster, and better workmanship IMHO. If I wasn't in NC, I'd give you contact info. Debbie might be able to grab it off my desk at work though. Business card is on the corner of my desk I think. P.S. And yes, you should just get a pair and shave them to whithin 3/32nds, and then just run them in the front for a weekend. 3/32nds is still less than 1% differnce in circumfrence, and you can get that much just from normal front/rear wear differential between rotations. I am running 215s and 615s that started about 3/32nds apart, but evened out in a weekend at Miller. |
Stupid Intarweb double posted. Or so I am claiming... :)

Thanks Dean. That sounds like a safe bet. Let me know the name of the place in Sparks when you can please.
What's the cheapest way to get RT-615's locally? I've seen you guys post about Discount Tire. Are they local? |
Not anymore, but they usually do free shipping so they still are cheapest usually.
|
|
Does anybody have them in stock though?

Silver State Retreading
480 Dunn Circle Sparks, NV 89431 775-355-8883 I worked with Rick Rea, but anybody over there shold be able to help. |
Thanks for following through Dean. I think I'm actually going to buy another full identicle set off Bemani. Khail pointed out he was selling them and this way I'll eventually have 6 identicle wheel/tires that I can rotate between...no shaving required.
|
Silver State Retread is now called TDS (Tire Distribution Service), same guys are there though, they're just owned by a large corporation now. Rick Rea is good to deal with.
|
IIRC Tire Rack doesn't shave or heat cycle in Sparks. You have to order from Indiana.

They also did such a sweet job aligning my F250 that the front tires lasted almost 5000 miles. |
