Tower Records is closing

God damn it.

In the two years I've lived here, I haven't really found a decent record store, but Tower Records was the closest thing to a decent record store that I've found in this town. They had good selections of industrial (hell, I haven't seen a dedicated industrial section in forever), electronic music, techno, indie hip-hop, indie rock, and almost everything else I listened to. Now, their prices weren't always the best (a few bucks too high on average), but at least they had shit in stock and my impulsive musical needs could be easily met.

And I walk in today to find out that its closing. It looks like they'll be open till December or thereabouts (probably for the Christmas season). Everything is at least 10% off right now (up to 30%).

Yeah I seen that!! It sucks because if I couldnt find it they most likly had it!!Not to mention the mag selection was great!! Sometimes I would love to all jacked up on early morning caffine fix and check out magazines for hours and buy like five off the wall euro car mags.It will be missed :(

Blame BestBuy and Walmart. Hell, Tower actually kinda sucked as far as "cool" music stores are concerned... but like Nick said, at least they sold something other than Top 20 MTV garbage.

Looks like it's back to the internet for music. And the record companies wonder why their profits are slipping.

I dont buy cds at best buy anymore! If it at best buy its on iTunes!!

Nick Koan 2006-10-09 10:15 PM

Yeah, iTunes music store (for instant gratification and import cds) and amazon for the physical ones.

Bob Danger 2006-10-09 10:36 PM

If you're lucky you can find some good CDs at Recycled Records, but Soulseek and Itunes is the way to go.

MPREZIV 2006-10-10 06:13 AM

How Gay!!! I'm just hearing about this, and frankly, it pisses me off! Tower was about the only place I could find most of the f*ed up stuff I listen to!

The tower down here in Sonoma is closing as well :(

I think the whole company is downsizing

They got bought out, the company that bought them is liquidating it. Every tower records will be gone by the end of the year.

News story

I never went there. Well not recently anyway. If Best Buy didn't have it I'd just surf the interwebs til I found it. Which takes like 5 seconds to find what you want.

Then a few days for shipping.

I could go to Tower on a whim during my lunch break and be listening to the new beats on my way back to work.

Well that blows even more. I figured it was just the Tower in Reno.

The original Tower Records in Sacramento was one of my favorite stores growing up.

Ezdno 2006-10-10 01:20 PM

The Tower stores announced closings back in Feb or March of 06. I was at one that was closing in the great northwest and they at that time said all stores would be affected. I never go to Tower for anything so I didn't really care. I also heard that the same company purchased the Sam Goody stores from Sun Coast and liquidated their assets as well.

Sorry.

Bump.

One week to go. Its slim pickings, but everything is 70% off right now. I just picked up 6 CDs (that I probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise, to be honest) and it was only $30.

100_Percent_Juice 2006-12-10 10:38 PM

70% is pretty good, but all you will be able to find now is the dixie chicks and metallica's st. anger. poo

JonnydaJibba 2006-12-11 09:18 AM

ST ANGER RULES!!!!HAHAHAWTFPWND.

The band Metallica ceased to exist after the "black" album...

It's kinda funny. On one hand you are right, its only the big name flops out there but there is also a lot of smaller, more obscure stuff still available. I was actually able to find quite a bit, but there was also quite a bit I looked for and didn't find. Most of the stuff I found is on my b-list as most of my a-list choices are popular enough to already get picked through, but not popular enough to have tons of copies of.

I was able to pick up
DJ SS - S Files
James Figurine - Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake
Vast - Turquoise and Crimson
Lights of Euphoria - Krieg Gegen die Maschinen
VCR - Power Destiny
Hypher - We Control

khail19 2006-12-11 12:27 PM

I was there Sunday, picked up a few decent things.

Better Than Ezra - Before the Robots (Only $1)
Best of New Order
U2 - Wide Awake In America

Nick was there on release day for that one. Even got the commemorative edition that came with one of the coffee cans and empty cardboard boxes that Lars used as his drum set on the album.

Nick Koan 2006-12-11 04:01 PM

But, in all truth, I am wearing my copy out. So, maybe I should go pick up another copy.

100_Percent_Juice 2006-12-11 05:25 PM

on a serious note, if your going back in there see if there are any pantera dvds. I would be mucho grateful.
