Can't Find This In The Rule Book.
In Street Prepared can I remove my power steering rack, and replace it with a manual rack?

Ther won't be anything specific on power steerings. Up date back date, or available options are the only provisions that might apply.

You have to go to the class listing in the Appendix and look at the line your car falls under. You can then take ANY part from ANY other car that also falls under that exact line in the rulebook.
Example: I can put a gearbox from a 1993 AWD 1.8 liter Impreza in my 1997 2.2 liter Outback Sport, because both are listed on the same line under "Impreza NOC" in FSP. However, I can't use a gearbox from a Legacy GT (non-turbo, not the current generation) even though it is also in FSP, because they are not listed on the same line. Also, engines must be taken as a complete longblock (heads, block, internals, valvetrain, etc.) and transmissions must be a complete unit from a single car as available direct from the factory, except that you can modify diffs therein. So, if any Corrola GT-S, or 1.6 liter Corrola, or however they worded it in the class listing came without power steering, you can use that rack and whatnot. If no AE86 came with manual steering, you are probably SOL. |
In the rule book under D Street Prepared, it states 84-87 Corolla GT-S (AE86), it mentions nothing regarding the Corolla SR5 in any of the classes. The SR5 had the same production dates, and the same AE86 chassis, but came with a SOHC engine, no LSD, and a manual steering rack. I think I already know the anwser to this but I'm going to ask anyways, can I take a manual rack from a SR5?
Also since the rule book specifically says AE86, does that mean I can update my car to full JDM spec? Technically there is no AE86 in the US, it's refered to as the AE88, or so states the vin numbers of every RWD Corolla imported into the US between 1984, and 1987. Just like the FX in every other country was called the AE82, but here in the US it was the AE89. So can I take a manual rack off of a JDM AE86, and put in one of the high comp. red tops out of an AE86? Now of course I know I can't, but they should clear that up in the rule book. |
The first paragraph of the SP rules are pretty clear early on that all references are to US vehicles shipped in reasonably large quantities.
For update back date, the vehicles must be on the same line. (See 15.1.c) So no JDM swaps unless the part was also on a US model that would fall on the same line. Unless I am mistaken, SR-5 is not a real model designation, it just means the car has a 5 speed. GTS however is. So the Corolla, and the GT-S are different cars as they appear on different lines. Oh, and the non GTSs all appear to be FSP. They even call out the SR-5 for some years. But there are many lines, so you can't even swap parts between those lines. Not the answers you probably wanted, but hope that helps. |
I already decided against it, its not worth the 8% increase in speed from lock to lock.
The SR5 was a model, it was the base line corolla for those years. It's like comparing the WRX and the STI they are both Impreza's. The SR5 had a single cam 4A-C, no LSD, rear drum brakes, and a manual rack. It made about 100hp. Whereas the GT-S has the Twim Cam 4A-G, a LSD, disc brakes on all four corners, and power assisted rack and pinion. |
