Trans Fluid

I was checking all my fluid levels and I noticed that I'm a little low on Tranny fluid. I was wondering if I should just go get some of Subaru's trans fluid and top it off or get something worth while like Redline Shockproof? I have 14,2XX miles on the car and I was going try and avoid the dealer service because it isn't anything I can't handle.

Redline LIGHTWEIGHT Shockproof is God's gift to Subaru transmissions.

STOP.

Are we talking about Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) for a 4EAT, or Gear Oil for a 5MT?

DO NOT PUT TRANSMISSION FLUID IN A MANUAL GEAR BOX, DO NOT PUT GEAR OIL IN A 4EAT!!

Gear oil for the 5MT

What he said. If you don't feel like changing out ALL the fluid right now, just top it off with standard GL-5, but if you do want to change it out, go with the Redline Lighweight Shockproof... NOTHING ELSE!

is that the stuff that i need? It says not for use in most synchro type transmissions :?: . Just making sure, i will be running to Summit in the morning.

And just to add, if i do the Trans fluid, do i need to do the diff fluid too? If I do need to change the diff fluid...do i just use the Redline fluid?

cody 2007-04-13 11:44 PM

Redline 75-90 NS (no slip modifier) gear oil goes in the diff IIRC.

MikeK 2007-04-14 04:08 PM

You definately don't want the blue stuff in the diff.

Well I put in the 75W90NS fluid in my trans and i am very satisfied. That is the fluid that was recommended by Redline for the WRX. Shifting is much smoother, i still have to come almost to a complete stop to shift into first but fluid wasnt going to fix that. Thanx for all the feedback.

Actually, Lightweight Shockproof *does* fix that. That's why we all like it so much. But it's not GL5 so RedLine doesn't recommend it because then they'd be liable since the Subaru manuals say to use only GL5 oil.

^^^ Oh. I just remembered reading that the Shockproof wasnt recommended for a synchro trans, so i tried this stuff. Maybe i will try Uncle Scotty's Cocktail next time...

The friction modifier in shockproof works wonders for making the synchros grab and work better. The downside is that the friction modifier may reduce bearing life... but if it's reducing the tranny from 200,000 miles down to 150,000 miles, who cares.

I tried 50/50 RedLine 75w90ns/Lightweight Shockproof, and I like the straight shockproof better.

I'm using Uncle Scotty's Cocktail...just put it in about a month ago. Prior to that I had always run OEM gear oil. The Uncle Scotty's was a slight improvement, but I've never had any issues with my transmission. Even with the Uncle Scotty's, I still have to try a few times to get into Reverse sometimes, buth that's typical. It does seem I can shift into First while doing 20mph without double clutching without issue now...not that I ever tried it on the OEM stuff.

I'm planning on doing 100% lightweight shockproof next time, or maybe go back to OEM.
