tahoe is on fire...

yeah, it's pretty close.

Nick Koan 2007-06-24 04:24 PM

Yeah, I saw the smoke. And the news. Eek, that fire looks big.

Good luck to everyone up there.

DARKSTI 2007-06-24 04:45 PM

Yea, I was just up there, very horrible. 50 homes/buildings destroyed :(
edit:I was up at cave rock and noticed a few people standing and watching, the one of the females(dont know if was mom or daughter) started hugging and crying on one of the guys shoulders.

MattR 2007-06-24 05:57 PM

This sucks. The fire in the NW came a little too close to me. I hope the weather improves so South Lake has a chance, otherwise :(

I got a few pics of that one:
I shot a few at ISO800 to make sure I got the scene, so there is some noise, but I wanted the scene more than anything else.

That's 3 fires in like 5 days right? Seems a little odd.

Yea,no lightning either:?:

Dean 2007-06-24 08:24 PM

We were talking about this at dinner and on the way back from Fernley.

You can't stop a fire in 40MPH + winds. It will jump any line and you don't dare get in front of it anyway. And even flying around near it in those winds could be tricky. I amazed they saved anything in it's path. Maybe it was more of a matter of diverting it around...

It is really sad, but the Tahoe basin has been ripe for a good fire for years. Lots of fuel even though they have been doing some clean up / abatement.

RGJ story.

Of course it is, and it's totally safe as well.

Besides the fire looks like its easily a hundred yards away.

rubberbiscuitt 2007-06-25 06:33 AM

i'm glad to see my shitty house still standing(we stayed the night in carson, now we're back) luckily for now the fire is headed up echo. but i may have a different story to tell if the wind shifts...

Nick Koan 2007-06-26 01:30 PM

Found this map of the fire path on RGJ.

Man, that is really close to the place I rented back when I was living up in SLT.

cody 2007-06-26 02:18 PM

Damn, we park right there on the SW side of Fallen Leaf Lake when we backpack up there every year. :(

Joeyy 2007-06-26 02:19 PM

Wind is picking up and they have spot fires jumping what little line they have. Looks like a long night.

One of my good friends from growing up in Tahoe used to live on Lake Tahoe BLVD. His parents still live there, luckily their house was spared. They live two houses down from where Lake Tahoe BLVD turns into Upper Truckee. Literally two streets over from it.

My buddy called me yesterday and told me that he went in there yesterday on his mountian bike to get some personals for his parents. He said it looked like a war zone a couple of blocks up from his parents house.

Across from Sawmill Pond Rd is the old South Tahoe Archery Club that I used to belong to as a kid. Too bad most of it appears to have been burned down now.

As a kid, I remember hearing about the oppressive actions of TRPA and how their policies would add up to a ferrocious fire some day. I also remember that TRPA finally allowed logging companies and the Forest Service to start clearing dead trees out. But only during the winter if there was enough snow cover on the ground. During the summer they were allowed to do tree removal during the summer with helicopters only. That was 10 years ago, basically the summer I graduated from High School.

TRPA = Tahoe Basin Nazi's. Damn tree huggers!! They can go hug a burning tree for all I care.

What a place to have to cut line. Not the most horizontal terrain in the world. Those firefighters are really busting their asses.

DARKSTI 2007-06-26 02:51 PM

Its turning into an even worse nightmare and jumped fire lines :(

JonnydaJibba 2007-06-26 02:55 PM

I feel so bad for everyone that lives there! It really feels like it is hitting home. I feel worse about this fire than I did the one in Carson a couple years ago (even when I lived there). But the reason behind that should go without saying...

NevadaSTi 2007-06-26 03:26 PM

Darksti, send us a link of where you got that picture. Please.

NVM, I found it.

Of about a dozen homes on his street, Neal Cohn's was one of just two that was spared from the flames. He attributed its survival to the fact that he regularly removed fallen pine needles from his property, a practice that is banned and subject to fines by the [TRPA] regional planning agency, which says their removal exposes bare soil and causes erosion, a prime culprit in Lake Tahoe's declining clarity.

"You can see the fire line behind my house where the pine needles stopped," he said, "and the neighbors didn't do it."

Nick Koan 2007-06-26 03:43 PM

Oh man, with the fire jumping the line, it looks like the place I used to rent on 10th & Clement st. is in serious danger. Man oh man.
