Faltering acceleration

I just bought a 93 Impreza L for my daughter. Car ran ok during test drive, and for first day or so. Now she's experiencing a faltering when accelerating in 2nd gear, in 15-30 mph range. She reports it doesn't continue when she's shifted up to higher gears. 170,000 mi, 5 speed manual trans.
Also, what's the method for testing for clutch wear? I got noticable slippage when I tried with car in first gear with brakes set and gradually eased the clutch pedal out. Dealer said I did it wrong...set parking brake and popped clutch. Who's right?

Be more specific about the "faltering" when given gas; is it a gradual bogging down, or is it getting a hard miss, or are the RPM's rising but no corresponding acceleration? We'd need a lot more descriptive info to try and diagnose a problem like this over the internet.

clutch test- i thought you were supposed to pop the clutch out in that test. if it stalls, then ok, if it lurches or some other response, it's not ok. or maybe that's bass ackwards.

I've heard the same thing from a Shop. If you pop out the clutch with no gas you should stall. Than again i tend to collect a lot of wrong info ... *take with grains of salt*
