Local Computer Stores

I need to drive somewhere close to downtown and pick up 2 or 3 workstations and LCD's today. I'm going to check out CompUSA but if there's nothing priced decently, any other local places I can fall back on? Oh Seņor Cheap Bastard?

Kevin M 2007-11-06 09:50 AM

Does it have to be today? I've been happier ordering PCs from Newegg than trying to shop around locally.

cody 2007-11-06 10:33 AM

Yah, I need it today or tomorrow. If I had been told prior to yesterday that we are hiring 2 new people, I would have ordered them online already.

Nick Koan 2007-11-06 10:40 AM

Fry's in Roseville.

cody 2007-11-06 10:44 AM

I don't have 4 hours to kill, driving.

khail19 2007-11-06 12:03 PM

Maybe Costco/Sam's Club/Wal-Mart? I don't know, I haven't computer shopped for a while.

I figured as much, but it is the best local* computer store. Otherwise, CompUSA is decent. Big enough to have cheap prices, but not BestBuy big where the start gouging.

* locality is relative

I faired okay at CompUSA. 2 decent desktops and 2 19" LCD's for ~$1500

Kevin M 2007-11-06 05:31 PM

Not bad, depending on what a "decent" desktop is. :)

Dean 2007-11-06 05:57 PM

Should have contracted with Senior Cheap bastard's shopping service. :)

...and not 9 "hey does anyone have an XYZ for cheap, I mean I know you can get them shipped for $3 online, but I was hoping someone had one they could pay me to take off their hands" threads and three weeks later. :P

I'll post links to them tomorrow.

I gotta say, looking at so many computers today, HP makes some really inexpensive, nice monitors and their computers are a great bang for the buck. The HP laptop I picked up for the owner of the company not too long ago was really nice for the $.

Seņor Cheap Bastard does local too. (And I speeled "too" right just for Scoot) :P

100_Percent_Juice 2007-11-06 10:39 PM

You should have gotten e-machines

cody 2007-11-06 11:05 PM

I have had an emachine desktop for 3 years and it hasn't had any problems yet. Of course, I probably think it's the bee's knees because the laptop I use every day is a 6 year old budget Compaq.

Man, I didn't realize they made computers that long ago.

Oh, yes. . . my first notebook was a Compaq Armada that I picked up in 2000. I also remember quite well the Compaq 150MHz Pentium desktop that a roomie had. It was almost completely impossible to upgrade due to all the proprietary hardware. . . funny shaped case, motherboard with daughterboard riser for PCI/ISA slots, on-board RAM. . .

You lucky bastard. We had to move dead bugs from one hole in the ground to another and occasionally they weren't quite dead yet and crawled between holes which we called the cockroach error. Today it is just known as a CRC error. :P

Oh man, more geek humor PLEASE!

It's not bad. 256MB of RAM, Athlon XP 1200 running XP Pro, PCMCIA slot, great speakers. It takes about 10 minutes to fully reboot, but once you get a browser window up, you can't even tell how old it is. :D

I'm going to reinstall the OS pretty soon here. It's been like 4 years.

Yeah, that'll probably fix most of your real speed issues. And if all your doing is browsing the web and checking e-mail, its gotta be more than sufficient.
