i found a way to pu a small front mount ic..say from maybe a mits gsx or somethin in the front pass side. air will go in through the 3 little vents and pass through vents i must cut out of my wheel well.

from the turbo to the hole in the side, and at the bottom there is a plastic piece i can have the piping go back to my t/b. the only thing i'd have to do is get a i/c and find some piping i could make up

drfunk 2003-09-23 08:26 PM

then i could just get an ait-water i/c and spend a bit more money........i dont need anything big being that im only running 5 psi.

Actually, Sean, I don't know that a Sidemount IC will do much for ya... true it'll cool things off a bit, but by running all that piping over and back, you're going to introduce quite a bit of lag to your spool up. Since you're running only 5psi, you don't need a ton of cooling... a TopMount IC would work really well, either air-to-air or air-to-water. The stock top mount IC is almost adequate on the stock WRX's turbo running 15psi... something like that should be more than enough for your setup at 5psi. Plus it'd be way cheaper since there's lots of wrx guys that have upgraded and would prolly let a stocker go for cheap.... 'course you'll need a hood scoop.... might as well try to find a WRX hood, they're like what, 100lbs lighter than the RS's?

at this piont i think im ok but when it starts to get really hot in the summer there will be more chance of detonation, so i was thinking about an air to water ic. it wont take up much space and i dont have to do any mods to my car.

Good point, with an air/water IC the cooling will be done by the existing radiator up front, no hood scoop or complicated piping needed. Now you just need to find an IC! Ask Nate from S-Squared... he might be able to find you a used one off an older Legacy!

Yeah we talked about a stock WRX IC at the last meet, but Sean'd have to replace the hood on the car too cuz his RS doesn't have a scoop. Plus the piping required to get his turbo kit to mate up would be expensive. I think the stock WRX IC would work really well with his setup, but the cost vs. an air-to-water setup wouldn't be worth it...

check this out: http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~gavinp/airwater.htm

The more I read about an air/water system, the more I'm thinking it may not be so cheap. I figured water hoses would be a lot cheaper than getting intake pipes bent, but an air/water IC is gonna need a water pump, which adds cost. If you can find a complete setup off a Legacy RS motor you'll prolly have a nice setup for a good price, but anything new is gonna cost a bunch. Is your turbo water cooled? If it is, I wonder if you can run the water for the turbo thru the IC before it goes to the turbo... 'course I'm not sure about the effect that'll have on the turbo... it may not be able to handle being cooled by already heat-soaked water...

AtomicLabMonkey 2003-10-28 02:37 PM

The car already has a water pump, why would it need another one? He could tap into the heater core supply-side hose and run lines to an intercooler from there, just like you can with a oil-to-water oil cooler.

let me know if anyone finds one before me

Most people have found that the water pump in the WRX doesn't flow enough to handle the cooling of an air/water IC. But that's on an older WRX running 15psi of boost... not a new RS running running 5psi, so perhaps it's enough.

Why not? My RS has a scoop, and I don't even have a turbo!

I'm sure he wouldn't mind the scoop, cux it does look cool, but cost is a factor, and buying a hood can be expensive.

drfunk 2003-11-03 12:33 AM

even if i didnt put a top mount ic a scoop could help maybe a bit with engine temps. but i kinda still want it to look like an RS too. all i need is a "T" for the back (2.5RS-T)

There's gotta be a debaged TS out there somewhere! Post a "want to buy" add on NASIOC and I-Club.
