came out to the races

So upon the suggestion of some people I went out to Stead last weekend to check out the races. I was pretty impressed. Lots of nice cars out there, and friendly people (talked to somebody from this forum). I came at the wrong time so I missed seeing some of the cars I was interested in: Z06, Viper, supercharged lotus, and a couple sti's to name a few. Saw a seccs sticker on every car. I might get involved just for one of those sharp looking stickers  Hell who knows, maybe I'll even be out there someday.

Driving is more fun than watching :D

Good luck with that idea.

bign 2008-07-02 04:10 PM

that sounds negative :(

cody 2008-07-02 10:17 PM

It's just that a lot of us want stickers but Scott has been too busy to make them. I'm sure Nevada STi didn't mean anything negative...at least not toward you. :P

NevadaSTi 2008-07-03 07:42 AM

Not towards anyone really. I probably should have linked back to this thread, http://www.seccs.org/forums/showthread.php?t=6931 which was made a few days prior to yours.

I've been out to a track day when I still had my STi. Perhaps mine was out there, hard to say. But I do know that going to the track is a lot of fun, but actually driving it is a ton of fun.

ahh, thank you for the clarification. Well I would love to race out there but i'm not gonna take my ol 5 speed out there. I don't much feel like getting new gears put in that thing. Someday....someday....

moose 2008-07-03 09:07 AM

Dude, there is a ton of people who race with stock gears out there. Its not a big deal. I manual shift with my auto and nothings wrong it. So do it

cody 2008-07-03 09:41 AM

Yah, most courses don't require a launch and once you shift into 2nd, you can just leave it there, unless it's a fast course, you may have to shift to 3rd and back to 2nd, but the only real risk to your gear box is shifting down to 1st and launching, I imagine. Both are avoidable.

bign 2008-07-03 10:39 AM

I hear more stories about 2nd gear shattering on the 5 speeds. I'm sure I could run out there without abusing it too much but I really am trying to sell this thing and get an sti.

The '04+ WRX 5MTs aren't that bad, the people losing gears tended to be '02/'03 WRXs with big turbos at the drag strip. Autocross isn't like drag racing... there's never a good reason to dump the clutch out there, which is what stresses the gearbox.

Really, it's not a big deal.

I think it's MY 03 (manu. after June of 02) and later...so I've read...in which case, my July 02 manu'd car has the thicker gears. :D

Edit: I was close.

It is important to note that as of March of 2002 (build date) the Subaru 5MT swapped over to RA width gears. If your transmission code is TY754VN2AA you have the narrow gears. If you have transmission code TY754VN2BA you have the wider gears. So many 2002 and some 2003 (model year) users switching to newer gears would not only get new gears, but stronger gears. All gears available through Subaru are now the newer RA width.

So what part of "the people losing gears tended to be '02/'03 WRXs with big turbos at the drag strip" is wrong?

cody 2008-07-03 03:13 PM

I don't recall saying that anything is "wrong" with that statement. Just thought I'd clarify by noting the point at which SOA started using the thicker gears and that my car has the thicker ones, even though it's a bugeye.

That's super news. We were all so concerned in this thread about whether or not your gears were thick. :P

cody 2008-07-06 05:57 PM

You're a Super Asshole. :monkey: It was relevant enough to mention in passing. <_<

ouch!!!, Don't worry about gears too much, I don't really baby mine anymore and the've held up(93L gears with an ej20g swap). Autox is really more about driver skill than how fast your car is, and if you're humble you will have a bunch of fun:D....
BTW
I'm a slow autox noob who doesn't expect to win any thing so take my advice with a grain of salt,..... and some beer
