anybody good with audio?
I need somebody to look over my audio installation to make sure everything is right before I put it all back together. If anybody is really good at audio stuff let me know. I'll provide some beer/gas money to come check it out.
I would be happy to look at it for you. What exactly do you have questions about?
Khail is the man for this stuff too, BTW.
It's my first time doing my own install. I did about 80% of my wrx install but i'm trying to do the whole thing on my sti now. I just wanted somebody with the know how to take a look at it and help me with all the setting so I know it's right before I button it all up. I hate taking door panels off :(
If you have some free time today give me a call. 775-848-9468 nick |
definatly a job for Khail

I have this terrible fear of wiring things out of phase. Every section of the car has a different color wire for positive/negative. The colors change from the headunit, to the adapter, to the doors.....it's re-frikin-diculous. If any experts are free tomorrow please give me a call. I get off work around 2 and really want to finish this up.
So your just running new speakers off of the stock head unit with the stock wiring and you are wondering if all the colors are going to the correct +/-?
I'd be happy to help, but I've been working 60+ hours a week at my new job and I wouldn't be able to look at it until Saturday after 3:00 or Sunday.
Checking for proper phase is fairly simple to do with a 9v battery. Even if a speaker is wired out of phase it won't really damage anything, you'll just have a lack of bass response. |
I am installing front components and hooking them to a 4 channel amp that will also be running a sub. I am also installing 5 1/4 speakers in the rear which will be running off HU power.
I think I checked if they were phased correctly by hooking the wires up to a AA battery. I just twist the wires together the way I think it should be set up and touch the ends to the +/- of the battery. I pay attention to the wires touching the pos terminal of the battery. If the speaker pushes 'out' then those wires are postive, if the speaker sucks in then those wires are negative...is that right? I am matting/sound foaming the doors so my big concern is getting everything done, put back together, and then realizing something is out of phase. There is always a chance of breaking/scratching something the more you have to take it off. Especially things like those damn door handle trim pieces. I'm one of those guys that gets everything done and is just paranoid something was done wrong. |
Man, your setup sounds identical to mine.
the sizes are pretty standard for our cars.
Polk MOMO MMC6500 6.5 components (front) Alpine type S 5-1/4 rears MTX thunder 10" sub amp link http://www.mainstreet-audio.com/Merc..._Code=MRV-F545 There was an infinity 12" sub in a q-logic box with a kenwood 800w amp hooked to it when I bought the car. I will be selling that if anybody is interested. It was waaay to much thump for me. |

God I wish I had 05 door cards. The 04 tweeter placement is better but, you already know that judging by your last picture. I had the 6.5 alpine type-s speakers in the rear of my other car and I like them for some rear fill sound but, I would never have them in the front. They don't really have any balls. I love that model amp. I have the MRV-F345 running my type-r components and it sounds great IMO. Did you have to use a spacer for the Polks in the front doors? I really want to hear your setup when your done.
Yeah, the new door cards are the balls. I re-used the oem speaker spacer and cut out part of it to make it shorter, fits in there perfect and I even have room to leave the magnet cover on without having to cut that little gold bolt in the bottom of the window.

So other than some light trimming of the OEM speaker ring the stuff in the doors just dropped in?
Yes, I took out the cardboard ring thing and then trimmed out the remaining plastic lip that held it in. The speaker just screwed right in, clears the window even with the magnet cover on, and doesn't hit/rub the door panel. It's the stock spacer so it uses the stock little plastic nutplates too, no drilling.
i can look over it if you still need someone to.. i have 6 installs under my belt.
I feel as though it sounds good enough for me. If you see me jump in and take a listen. I don't know everybody yet so I'm not sure who you are.
