Heel pads for carpet repair?
A while back I wore a hole through the carpet in front of the gas pedal on the WRX. I though some really heavy-duty tape would be enough to cover it up, but alas, now that I'm driving the car again with regular shoes (as opposed to race boots), the tape is peeling up, and now I've got a sticky mess to deal with.
Anyone know of a solution? This is the best I've been able to find online: http://www.apadco.com/auto/heelpads.html I'm not so sure though, as they talk about using some spray adhesive to glue it down. I figured a proper solution would have some sort of epoxy or be like a dynamat type substance. I've had bad luck with spray-on fabric adhesive in the past. Cory, you've got a small diamond plate deal in your car don't you? Where'd you get that, and how is it stuck down? I'm wondering if the easy solution would be just to bolt a cut and formed piece of aluminum sheet to the floor. :?: |
Your floor mat doesn't cover it?

Floor mat + caged track car != fun. All of the maneuvering getting in means you're going to kick the thing all around and run the risk of getting it under/over the gas, brake, or clutch, which is not a good thing.

I assumed you were complaining about the hole now that your car is street legal and you are driving it around. You could always take the mat out before a race. Those plastic pieces that you linked to are in a lot of cars and adhesive should work fine. If you are worried about it peeling up then I guess you can glue it on.

I got that thing from that old "Car Toyz" place in Park Lane mall, which is obviously not there any more... I think it was made by one of the ricer accessory companies like Razo or TenzoR, and it's literally called a "Heel Plate" made to keep you from wearing holes in your floor, and it's got that hump in it to pivot your feet off of.
I just put sheet metal screws through it to make sure it didn't go anywhere! It even came with the screws! |
You can get full diamond plate "mats" for just over $100 a set on eBay... :P
And isn't it time to take the carpet/headliner/interrior out of the race car? |

Post up if you find a cheap easy solution. I wouldn't mind protecting the carpet from my heel since I remove the mats when I race.

But since I'm not totally sure I'm going to keep the car once the motor's tuned I don't want to strip the car down any more than it already is. If I sell it, I'll leave it up to the new owner since as it is, you could actually drive it daily if you're hard core enough not to need/want A/C or heat (actually, heat is just two hoses away from working). Plus, that's a shit load of work that I'm not interested in spending time and money on at this point. |
