Interstate 80 Construction

I've gotten stuck in the traffic between Truckee and Reno a couple times and didn't like it very much. We will be heading to King's Beach this weekend and I'd like to know if I should take Mt. Rose to avoid traffic. Anyone know?

No, I'll let you borrow my helicopter though.

word, I can show you next time

I would take Mt.Rose. They have the returning lane of 80 down to one lane with barriers on each side. Traffic gets backed up quick and there is nowhere to go.

That's going to be fun for all of the HAN traffic.

Well, if I can speak for the people doing the construction: there is a small window for when you can do road construction. The asphalt has to stay above 300 degrees F to be able to pave with it, so the surface temps can't drop much below 70 degrees F. This means that summertime is construction season. And if you want Nevada to continue to be in the top 10 in roadway quality in the nation, it's gonna have to stay like that ;) and if everyone is honest with themselves, it doesn't matter where or when the construction is, it's gonna piss you off. But it needs to be done, unless you like how 80 feels once you leave NV and enter CA...

What are you doing in "Crown Town"? Take Mt. Rose. You know you will enjoy the drive much more.

cody 2009-07-31 08:09 AM

Crown Town? Is that Truckee cuz of all the Crown Vic's?

Rob, of course road construction is a necesity. I just hope that all is done to limit the impact on travelers during peak traffic days. I'll do my part and take Mt. Rose. :)

Crown Town is what all the wantabee(sp?) gangsters call Kings Beach.

 Oh okay.

We're going to "The Dog Beach".

How does paving I-80 in CA help NV "continue to be in the top 10 in roadway quality in the nation"?

I haven't been out that way this year, so I didn't know exactly where the construction was when he said "between truckee and reno". And I was kind of speaking in generalities. But even I'll admit I still get frustrated in construction traffic. Just trying to add some perspective :)

Ha! I just got back from cali (I-80 to I-5) and I could definitely tell the exact point where I crossed into cali because of the road condition. I also got stuck coming back right before truckee for road work. It added about a half hour to my trip. :(

If I ever hear someone refer to Kings Beach as "Crown Town" I will probably choke them with their own bandanna. Trying to drive on 80 to Truckee is horrible unless you are in a trophy truck.

The construction sucks, I commute through it 3-5 times a week and its a different layout every time. 2 lanes, 1 lane, etc. I hope that this will be the most thorough road repair in the last 10 years. There have been a lot of wrecks/incidents related to it and it is poised to at least chip up your paint. Cant wait till street vibrations...
