What happened? Nice that you can get the swap.

Swerved to miss somebody that was coming into me, and over corrected and spun out. Thus resulting in jumping a 5" curb and smacking a bunch of stuff on the curb, then flying into oncoming traffic backwards.. Now I have a whining sound when I drive coming from the tranny/driveline. It's just a good excuse to motivate me to do the swap. I think it was fate as well.

Just making sure you're up on what else it takes for this swap...

You know you'll need 5x100 '04 STi rear hubs to replace the 5x114.3 hubs that are in that kit.

Plus you'll need some 5x100 gravel rally rotors to go with your existing 2-pot rear calipers (P/N RSTR-2634 from RalliSpec: http://www.rallispec.com/prod_brake.htm, or you should be able to get them direct from Subaru, but I don't know their FHI part number off hand). And that's assuming the TR 2-pot rears are the same as the gravel spec 2-pot rears that fit on the R180 compatible rear spindles (I'm pretty sure they are).

Alternatively, I'm not sure what the rear-end ratio is on the '06 TR, I think it's a 3.90. Older WRX's had 3.545's and older STi's had 3.90's... but I think in '06 they switched... so if you can find a 3.545 WRX R160 rear-end from an '02-'05 WRX, you can forgo all the rear brake/spindle/hub swap stuff and just keep an R160 in the back. Someone correct me about the TR's rear-end... if it's a 3.545 then it should work with the '06 6MT.

I'd be more worried that you've got wheels/suspension/wheel bearings damaged than the gearbox. Though you could have killed the rear-end and gearbox as well... but it's unlikely IMO that you'd break the tranny without also breaking those other parts along the way.

GusGus91 2010-08-12 11:28 AM

Im sure as we are going, we'll find out what else is wrong if anything else is.. I mean, it drove away and down the street.. but i'll just have to wait and find out..

GusGus91 2010-08-12 11:34 AM

Thanks for posting all that stuff up Sperry. It was a big help. Looks like I've got some research to do before I do this. Im still doing the swap though. :P

Are you going to stay 5x100?

Here are a couple threads from nasioc

Thanks kevin. I was looking for those!

So you're saying that as long as I get the R160 in the back, I can bypass at the other small stuff and call it a day? If that's the case, I'll just try and find one..

100_Percent_Juice 2010-08-12 02:41 PM

Maybe you should just take it back to stock and stick to riding a bike.

Well, I don't know about the front axles. I don't know if there's a stub axle or not on the WRX gearbox. There isn't one on the '06-6MT. So you may need to swap in the STi axles up front.

In the rear, if you keep your R160, you won't need to fuss with rear axles, spindles, hubs, brakes, etc. If the '06 TR WRX still used the 3.545 rear LSD like the pre-'06 WRXs did, then you already have what you need back there to work with the '06 6MT. That is assuming you know for sure the 6MT you're getting is from '06. If it's an '04 or '05 you'll need a 3.90 rear end. You really need the number off the gearbox in order to cross reference the year to be sure. Mismatching the rear-end ratio will demolish the center diff.

^^^ All this is why I chose to sell my car and buy an STi vs swapping drivetrain LOL. I believe the 06 wrx halfshafts are stubs...but its been a while since I looked.

100_Percent_Juice 2010-08-12 03:12 PM

IIRC 04+ is no stubs.

Can you get that fast when you're sliding sideways?
