Android phone discussion
Some of my clients are on Android, so my iPhone 3g is (temporarily?) offline.
I am now learning/carrying a LG Optimus T: Rooted, overclocked CyanogenMod 7.1-RC1 (Android 2.3.5) for only $70!!! w/32GB C4 MicroSDHC Still pre-paid, no data plan! :) I REALLY like Swype! Don't know why I can't download Cordy or Diversion from the market yet. Assume it thinks HW is not compatible. Search doesn't even find them, have to get to them from Appbrain.com Weird. Overall, I am liking Android. Standard annoyance of not being able to move "factory" apps to SD. Other non-iPhoneesque weirdness. Few Choice apps: (What do you like?) AdFree Advanced Task Killer (Yes, I know you don't need this and it can be bad) Camera Magic ColorNote (Since CyanogenMod doesn't appear to have a stock "notes" app) ES File Explorer Go SMS Pro operaMini Power Control Widget (Why they can't put the toggles in the stock pull down I don't know yet) QuickPic RealCalc SetCPU SIPDroid!!! This rocks! Fully Integrated Google voice incoming/outgoing calls any time I am on wifi!!! Seņor Cheap Bastard fully approves of free calls! Stopwatch & Timer (Why the stock clock app doesn't have those functions I'll never know and have not found a free one that does) Titanium backup WIFI Analyzer |
I like my Epic. Sprint also allows the option for making your Sprint number into a Google Voice number, which is pretty cool. All international calls are now routed through GV (even if first hop is cellular) and I get charged the GV rate. I don't make a ton of international calls, but it helped when dealing with my honeymoon travel arrangements and whatnot. Granted, you'd have to sign a contract to get that.
Android, though, IMO is like setting up a Windows PC. Its very customizable and you can eventually get it to where you want it to be, but it doesn't work as well as an iPhone out of the box. If you are willing to put in the time to customize it (and/or root it) then it is great. Also, I the Epic has a keyboard and Swype. I basically only use the keyboard now for passwords or if I need to type in a lot of numbers. In other news, Google bought Motorola Mobility earlier today for $12.5M. Motorola has supposedly been turning it around with their Android handsets (after their post-RAZR failings) so we'll see where that goes. Google has said they won't quit partnering all the other Android licensees out there, but it would make sense that Motorola will begin to get pre-access to new versions of Android and other special amenities. |

Try ES File Explorer. Better than Astro IMHO. Speedtest.Net is much more accurate on the upload speed than Speedtest. The later is just wrong claiming higher up than down speed in many cases! They are about the same on download accuracy. |
I use Tasker a lot for scripting certain actions automatically
For example Set phone to vibrate during meetings Set phone to vibrate when plugged in between 10pm and 6am Set phone noises (not ringer) to silent between 8am and 6pm M-F Turn on GPS when various apps launch, etc. Its pretty nifty, although the UI is one of the worst I've ever seen. I also like using MyTracks to map out hiking paths. It can upload straight to Google Maps too, which is awesome. |
I miss RunMeter. It is the best iPhone activity tracker, including Auto Pause and really cool audio controls from the headset button. Will have to try out MyTracks.
Tasker looks cool but haven't tried it yet. CyanogenMod has notification bar Toggles for most everything, so I use those. I dumped Camera Magic and am in search of a decent camera App. Camera plus and GorillaCam were awesome on iPhone. Burst mode on Android is laughable, probably because apps can't get enough RAM to cache their own pics and have to write them to flash in real time. :( I want full screen preview with touch/drag screen control over zoom, timer, burst. Hitting menu and then navigating is a pain! App2Sd is marginally better than the stock App manager, but should be able to batch move. :( Android VNC. Support my Mom's Mac while away from home is so much fun. Yippee Scotty, is TeamViewer better than VNC for some reason? Movies by Flixter (Flixter on iPhone, RottenTomatoes on web is still great.) |
The built in camera hardware and apps are wildly different for every phone and manufacturer, which makes it tough subject talk about.
I use Vignette for stylizing the photos, but for the most part the built in Samsung app isn't terrible on my Epic and I primarily use it. |

File expert is interesting. Similar but different than ES. Also better than Astro though. What is the feature that made you pick FE over ES or what feature do you use that is cool in FE? |
If they have plants vs. zombies you will probably want to pick that up.
