NEED: 1999-2001 RS transmission
So, I ran into some big issues... I need a 1999 -2001 transmission in order to get my speed sensor plug to line up. The 1998 has a magnetic speed sensor, and they won't match up to the electrical sensor in the 05 sti harness without replacing the trans. Since a 6mt is out of the question for now, does anyone have an RS transmission laying around that I can trade or buy?:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Is it the actual sensor itself that doesn't work, or the plug and tooth count? My understanding was that on all the 5MTs you can swap around the mechanism to adjust for gearing changes and different styles.
|
The problem is that in 1999 they switched to a digital speed sensor. The sensor in my 1998 is magnetic, and it cannot communicate with the '05 STi ECU. Without this sensor, I am limited to 4,500 rpms and no speedo...
Also, in order to replace that sensor for a digital one, I would have to open the transmission casing. |
Opening the gearbox to swap the sensor type seems a hell of a lot easier/cheaper than buying a new gearbox entirely.
I'm kinda surprised this isn't a solved issue. Lots of people have swapped '98s. Are they all swapping gearboxes as well? |
Factoring in the cost of labor to get a $100+ sensor installed, I would figure that the total cost would be around $700-900. I should be able to find a working transmission with the correct sensor for ~$300-600.
If I can find a converter, I could use that, but I cant find any information on them online, and I have never heard of anyone using something like it. It's my understanding that all 98 RS swaps have to either replace the sensor, get a new trans, or drive in limp mode. |
Opening up the transmission isn't actually that difficult.

Opening up the trans to swap out a speed sensor pick-up can be done in just a couple hours.
