Most any street tire will get sidewall damage if you hit something with the sidewall on or off-road. They will also get damaged with pothole type impacts when the sidewall gets compressed between the rim and the ground. Sidewalls already take a beating as they carry 100% of the load of the car, but if you bash them, especially if they are under inflated which they often are off-road, they can get damaged easily. Lower profiles are more prone to the later type of failure. That is one of the reasons Rally cars use higher profile tires.
There are special off-road tires with reinforced sidewalls for a reason. Just driving streets on a well maintained dirt road at reasonable speeds should be fine, but you are asking for trouble if you beat any tire not designed for it.
