But you mention fenders... I keep thinking a little open wheel car might be the ticket to going fast without the high cost of racing a 400+ hp motor. Everything's cheaper (motors, tires, brakes, etc) when the car weighs 1/3 less... assuming you're not running carbon fiber suspension.

Might be right, did you talk to any of them Sat.? I'm not sure the fast ones are actually significantly cheaper and I'd bet they have their own set of issues.
Looking at SportsCar...
SRF = $15-20K
Formula Fords: $12,500-15,500 and beyond depending on 500,1600,2000
Formula Vee: $6000+
but I'm not sure any of those are particularly fast.
Formula Atlantic... $30K+
I think this is more of what you are talking about.
And are parts actually cheaper? Supply and demand unless they use off the shelf fendered car parts / consumables, they might be more expensive than fendered.
