Another reason communism hasn't worked in practice is that people are basically lazy and selfish. It's just human nature. Why should someone do any more than they absolutely have to to get by, when they're not going to get anything for their effort in return? The free market system, while far from perfect, at least provides incentives to work your ass off, innovate and accomplish things.
