I dunno why, but in the RS community, there just seems to be something about 3rd that makes it most noticable. I simply *assumed* that other subi trannies with the same noise, would likely make it in the same gear. Mine is audible in 4th, but most prominent in 3rd. Possibly just the right amount of coast side force on the gear, or the setup of the shafts in the trans. case simply sending more of the sound through the case in 3rd... Never heard anything about newer cars not doing it with a LW flywheel.
I do know that I NEVER heard it before swapping the flywheel out for the Exedy 12.xx lbs unit. As soon as I heard it, I went frantically searching on rs25.com looking so see if I was the only one, or if I managed to f* up my transmission doing the install!
