If you show up for the court date you get to speak to one of the Asst. DA's in a little room off to the side of the courtroom before ever talking to the judge. He/she will reduce it or drop it. This works with speeding tickets, improper right turns, etc. If you get one it is worth showing up to get the fine and/or the points reduced on any ticket. I assume it would work for expired reg. as a friend got her $200+ no-proof-of-insurance ticket dropped completely. Plan on a couple hours time though.
