I saw the original on opening night in SLO. Packed theater full of college kids.. it was easily one of my top 5 best theater experiences. I had an awesome time seeing that movie.
I heard they made a second one that when straight to video. The third is likely the same. But like Kevin said, they make money if they don't spend a crap ton on advertising it... they've got a loyal fan base from the 1st movie and the Heinlein novels. Since they how much they'll make on it regardless of the quality of the movie, they just need to make sure the production costs are lower than the expected revenue and it's green-lit.
