Lots of people don't go to the STi arms *because* they're so stiff! People are afraid if they hit something they'll damage the frame because the arm won't bend! Plus, I haven't seen many STi's in rally... most people are running WRX's because of the 2.0L displacement rules. You prolly saw a WRX break a control arm.
