Default Ford Truck Help

My dad has a 99 F350 7.3L TD and something happened yesterday to the front passenger side hub. He took it into a shop to see if they knew what was wrong and they said it would cost $2400 to fix!! However they said if he brought it in today that they would have it done by lunch time. I think they are really trying to hose him so I said to hold out. Basically when you are driving the truck there is a mild pulsing that you can feel in the steering wheel. When you turn right or left the pulsing become much more noticable. Speed obviously changes the speed of the pulsing. I really have no idea how a hub and locking system works on a 4x4 but I know some of you do. Any advice would be awesome. Also if any of you have a manual or a diagram that shows all the parts that make up the front hub that would be awesome
