Usually, it is not just one CPU/ECU, but many, possibly in the same box, but often not. They all sit on the OBD2(On Board Diagnistics version 2) bus, so they can be managed from the one connector. It is actually really cool in some respects. On my A4, I can reprogram all sorts of stuff with the security module including opening and closing the windows/sunroof from the remote, etc...

Theoretically you can flash stuff through it as well if the manufacturer supports it. I can bring My notebook and OBD2 software if somebody wants to see it...

At minimum, you can see the codes your dealer doesn't want you to know about, and reset the ones you don't want him to know about...
I like that re-set codes before you go in for warrinty work :wink:
