So you're saying that the amount of money an athlete makes is inversely proportional to the acceptable risk of the sport? Now I see why they called Michael Schumacher a huge pussy for wearing seat belts all those years!

If a risk can be minimized with a very low detriment to the sport (i.e. minimum bat handle thickness, or let's say stuff like fire suits and belts in motorsports) then by all means, make the rule that keeps people safe. How much money they make is totally irrelevant.
I'm sure it was scored as a hit. The definition of an error is when a player does not complete a play that they should reasonably be expected to complete. I don't think it's reasonable to expect a player to make a play while protecting themselves from a lethal shard of bat.
